Cox Engine of The Month
Great day for new stuff

Great day for new stuff
The mail man delivered a couple of neat packages over the last few days. I got some 1/2 a diesel fuel, two RJL .049 diesel heads and a CS .061.
I have heard a lot of different things about the CS engines, most of it bad. Any how, I scored one on ebay at a price I couldn't refuse. The description said that this was one of ten engines blah, blah, blah. It was in new but gummed up condition when it arrived. Thankfully, it cleaned up nicely and freed up easily. It also fired up easily and ran beautifully. It is not a barn burner. But, it is a super steady, nice running little engine. I was too excited to remember to tach it.
On to the diesel learning experience. Yes, you do smell like the fuel after running diesel engines. I can't say I care for it. But, I bet I grow to appreciate it just like the smell of burnt glow fuel. Any how, I had built up my idea of a dream dieselized cox reedie. After about thirty minutes of propping I decided that I would be the one person that could safely start a dieselized cox with an electric starter. I now have a new paper weight. After that I grabbed an old golden bee and put the head on that. After about ten more minutes of playing with the compression knob I had it fired up and running well. After several tanks of fuel I finally thought to tach and time it. After adjustments it ran for three and a half minutes at 9000 RPM on an MAS glass filled 3 series 7x3. I am really happy with this. This little engine can be just what a nice, light, stick built airframe could really shine with.

My findings were so so as well. Brodak offered the .049 and .061 which were made by CS. I have a CS .049 and it's true ABC. The Brodak .049 is iron piston in a steel sleeve. The CS .049 ran quite well but my Brodak took a lot of persuasion. Does your CS .061 have a ABC setup?

I don't know what kind of piston/cylinder it has. I didn't take it apart to find out. The box is labeled "1 of 10 trial version" so I don't know if this is the same as the CS or Brodak or something different. There is an older Brodak .049 on ebay and I compared the two. The .061 I have has a different NVA and the head has the two holes in the top for the spanner type of head wrench. Other that that I couldn't see any differences. This is my first CS engine so I don't really know anything about them. If I get some time next weekend I will probably take it completely apart just because I can't help myself.

I did some more playing with the diesel heads. I put one on a medallion I had built. It is a medallion with a coxengines.ca "tee dee power" non-spi piston/cylinder, aluminum carb body and a tee dee .05 r/c carb, It runs beautifully. With the same MAS 7x3 prop it idled very nicely below 5000RPM and topped out at 11,500 RPM with a beautiful transition. Starting is a pretty big pain n the rear. I am hoping this gets better with experience. But, the engines have run super smoothly and dependably. I am looking forward to seeing how these little diesels do on a plane.
Ken,
I tried taking te head off the little CS but did not have any luck. I also tried removing the back plate but the slots were too thin to use a cox tool. I may just open them up a bit to remove the back plate and see if I can get a good enough look at the piston and cylinder liner to see what it is.
