Re: 1961 cox mercedes benz racer
The body polished up pretty good with Novus, it seems soft and pliable. I will take care tapping the mounting bosses. T he plastic is much softer than most of Cox model airplanes, must be a different type of plastic. Do the parts, dash ass., mirrors, exhaust, windscreen, etc. glue on? What is a good glue? Looks like I will need a doner car for the muffler, driver, box.

Re: 1961 cox mercedes benz racer
I had to put this project on ice till I can find the proper muffler, there is at least 3 in this lot but approaching what I paid for the new parts. I might just forget about it and part out what I have to try and recover the $.

WOW!! That was the Grail to a few, last min. snipe drove it higher. Not even enough parts to make one model complete, no hoods or body screws.
I can hope the buyer parts out a muffler.

Re: 1961 cox mercedes benz racer
One of our members, Bob (dckrsn) sent me the hard to find super rare muffler for the model. I can't thank him enough!! I was about to give up on the car and part out everything.
The engine was stuck but a little heat and it came apart easily for installing the muffler. Ready to proceed with assembly now, been busier than a movie producer grabbing azz so will have to wait a bit.

Re: 1961 cox mercedes benz racer
I'll have to say my hats off to the Cox employees that assembled the Mercedes car as it was quite difficult. Thanks to members Mudhen and Bob for parts and advice it is complete.
Many parts had to be fitted, the screw bosses were a problem and even tapping them with a body screw caused stress marks in the plastic. I wound up enlarging the holes so that only a few threads on the end of the screw engaged. There was still enough purchase to hold the halves together well.
Notice the wheels aren't on the axles yet, I assembled this way only to find the outside c clips will not go on, had to take it back apart.

Re: 1961 cox mercedes benz racer
Well i would say that's right then , just wondering about the plastic getting burnt ? If the engine is turning up 14K , the fan will pull a lot of heat for sure . Doug does that tank have the overflow tube on the bottom? i have never seen one of 5cc.

Its hard to tell but it looks like a dark red, maroon color, I think these were metallic also. Don't see many this color.
The left rear mirror is missing, windscreen cracked and the screws that hold the nose look to be busted out. Maybe could fetch a couple hundred on eBay.
Sure would like the box and driver though.

Re: 1961 cox mercedes benz racer
I just ran across this topic in which the last reply was approximately 6 months ago. Got me to thinking of the Mercedes that I purchased in the 80's from a gentleman that never ran his. One of those situations that if it is for sale and wanted, then one better buy it.
Thought I'd post some further images of mine in case it helps with some of the previous thread respondents. Missing the box, numbers and instructions but not the bridal.
Very interesting and informative site. Hope this helps with the community.

Nice one!! Im still looking for box. I have a scan of the stickers if you want it, I was going to have some printed up. I tried printing my own on sticker paper and came out OK buy not great.
A link to the instructions in PDF, the link didn't work. go to some Models and the car and docs are there.

Sincerely appreciate the location of the instructions for the Mercedes.
I would truly appreciate a scan of the stickers to complete this model that has been sitting for 30+ years in my possession.
Would you know where or what brand of self adhesive sheet would be best to try printing them out?
Thank you again.
