old timer satyr
hello all, i recently recieved plans from "www.airagestore.com" for a old time model airplane called the "old timer satyr" the airplane has a 65" wingspan and has a weight of 70oz, it recomends a 25 size glow or a 40 size ignition engine, the question that i have is has any one ever seen this airplane fly, if so how does it fly? and does anyone have a video or pictures of a completed old timer satyr? i really wanna see what i can do for a trim scheme and also how it flies,
thxs for any input

Re: old timer satyr
Cover it with silk and leave the natural white ish colour and highlight with. Blocks and lines of black and it will look great!
Re: old timer satyr

At a hobby store.
Not real silk it is called silk span or use a good and strong tissue covering.
Both need dope and then a fuel proof paint if desired.
Silk and tissue are the only real option for vintage lookin plaes IMO.

cool thankyou, will "hot" dope work as fuel proof, i have a bottle of the stuff, but how good does it work, i have never used it on a fuel powered plane, jus build and show models

Re: old timer satyr
The price of silk sold by the model industry has risen beyond ridiculous. However, there are other options. There are several on-line suppliers of silk fabric where the price per yard is very appealing. The downside is that most of the silk needed for modeling is sold in its natural color. You can still apply the silk, dope it and it will be translucent allowing the underlying structure to show thru. Colored dope may be applied as trim. This silk may be dyed using a fabric dye such as RIT, but it needs to be applied while still wet. If allowed to dry, you will lose some of the natural shinkage needed for covering a model. Clear dope will also shrink the covering, but without the natural shrinkage of the covering, getting a drum tight finish can be more difficult.
On-line sources:
Thai Silks
Silk Connection
Dharma Trading
The silk you want to use is Habotai 5mm. mm stands for momme, a measure of weight; 5mm is very lightweight.

But Wilf knows best!
Silk, as a covering material, is second only to nylon for strength, the only problem with using it is that it has to be applied to the model wet, you dope the framework, place the wet silk on to it, and tighten as much as possible, getting any wrinkles out, then further dope through the wet silk on to the frame. The dope will go white because of the moisture, but this disappears when further dope is applied after the silk dries. (This applies to cellulose dope, don't know about "modern" dopes).
Wetting the silk means soaking it, then squeezing most of the water out before using it.

That is exactly the theme I was thinking![/quote]
Pity it's only a black & white photo, the design doesn't seem to be very well known, can't find it on any of the Old Timer sites

Re: old timer satyr
That's odd I would have thought that in 1943 the czechs would have had a lot more to worry about than model planes
