Rare Cox parts wanted...gotta fly these babies!!!
Hi folks, I've just come across a few early TD and Cox engines, all with bits missing, so I have a short list of parts I need to get them complete and flying again. Most parts I had in my own cache, but the rest are probably like Dodo doodoos, which is probably why they've been robbed off the engines!! I hope one/some of you can help...
First up, I need 2 really good gold prop drive plates for TeeDee Special 15's,
second, a good spinner for a Space Hopper,
and lastly (and I'll bet hardest to find ) an alloy tank and backplate in any condition for a Strato Bug. Preferably blue...yeah, right!! Seriously, ANY condition as long as it will hold fuel! I've got the alloy tank but it's damaged beyond my ability to fix. Must've been one mother of a prang!
All fingers crossed....Cheers, guys.
Rob

Strato bug parts = unobtanium. I have seen one metal Strato tank sell on eBay about a year ago. I know who bought it too on CEF.
Gold anodized TD .15 drive hubs are hard to find. Cox international did run a batch of the medallion 15 drive hubs to be gold anodized but are all sold out now. I have 2 that the splines stripped out on. The .15 spline on the crankshaft was to fine and easily strips the hub out.
Space hopper and RR-1 spinners can be purchased from MECOA.

Hi Jason, thanks for the info. I had a feeling these would be hard to find. I suspected as much about the Strato Bug parts, looks like I will end up with another Space Bug Junior to play with, I've got a spare tank for one somewhere, or I could cobble up a lookalike replica tank and fit a Junior backplate, looks like it might work. I know several people who have had TD drive plates re-anodised and the colour and quality of the work leaves a bit to be desired. I'll probably fit Medallion ones for the meantime just to get the beasties up and running. I went on to MECOA site and could only find TD spinners, maybe I missed the Space Hopper ones. I'll try again soon.

Here it is on their eBay store.

Looks like the price went up. I don't remember paying that much in the past.

Hi Jason, thanks for the link. The price is not a problem, but that bit about 'does not ship to United Kingdom' kinda puts the brakes on. Oh, well...

You might look around for a early O.K. Cub .049B the spinner looks the same and the head would fit an early small diameter Cox cylinder so you can use a glowplug.
Re: Rare Cox parts wanted...gotta fly these babies!!!
Now THAT's the sort of information worth having!! Thanks for that, Mark. I wonder how many OK Cubs have been robbed already in the name of originality by RR-1 and Space Hopper owners...

Re: Rare Cox parts wanted...gotta fly these babies!!!
OK, I've accepted that finding a genuine Strato Bug tank is not gonna happen- the poor old girl is never gonna BE a real Strato again. Maybe that's not a bad thing, I would be too scared to fly the thing if it was! But at least I can try and make it LOOK like one. I saw on a thread that some enterprising soul (?) has made CNC copies ( or was it a one-off? ) of a Strato tank that my spare clear SBJ rear plate will fit on, any ideas where can I get my grubby mitts on one of those? No worries about damaging a copy! It's that or fit the whole SBJ tank, I guess.
The Space Hopper is now scrubbed up and looking good, but with a TD spinner till I get a proper one, and one of the Special .15's is finished, run, and sold already, even with the silver Medallion propdriver on it. I only need one gold drive plate now.
Cheers, Rob

And mine too, Getback! Stumped again, I'll have to do some measurements and see if I can modify/mangle a new cross-vent Bee tank into something like it. If I didn't want a runner I'd just knock up a solid dummy on the lathe, but there's no fun in that. Birds gotta fly! Looking more and more like another SBJ in my fleet. Still gotta find a donor OK Cub 049b for the head and spinner, my problem is I hate robbing a complete engine for parts, so I have to find the bits I need with as little engine attached as possible, or I'd likely end up restoring it!
