Flying wing free flight model
During the month of January, I made a new free flight plane powered by a Pee Wee. It's called Wing Ding and can be found at Hippocket Aeronautics. The wing is made of 3mm coroplast. To obtain the right dehidral, I slipped a bent piece of 3 mm threaded stud into the flutes. The build is otherwise very simple.
The propeller is an ancient white Thimbe Drome 4,5 x 2,5 that has been through the wars already. I mounted it on backwards. The C of G was spot on as indicated on the drawing. During first gliding tests, it glided nicely and straight ahead. I then did the first powered tests in my neighbour's garden. To my surprise, after launching, it climbed almost straight up and did a wingover. I added some 3,5g to the nose and a little weight on the left wing. I decided to move to the field across the road after I hit a tree and the garden wall. It does turn in circles but also does loops. I find that this forward swept wing does not behave in flight as a more conventional plane. 1 time, I had it circle to the right without any modification.
I made a video that is uploading now. Unfortunately, I was on my own and the launch of each flight is not recorded. To shoot the video, I grabbed my camera from work but it has had its best time and the images are not so sharp but it gives an impression of how the plane flies.

Bravo, magnifique !!!
Great flying! Seem fun, I´ve a lots Peewees, I´m sure to make one wing ding soon.

Hi José, it is lots of fun!! Get someone else to do the camera work so you can fully enjoy the flights. I always stick a label with my address to the wing in case it it flies away.

Ja, ja ... yes I aslso write telephone number at the airplanes but the secret is a few drops of fuel. I prefer radioassisted, too many trees and roads arround my flight club.

That's one big rudder/stab looked to fly better under powered or rich than with full , Other than that not bad with a V wing . Eric

Yes Eric, It flew more flat at lower RPM and climbed slower. I don't know if Pee Wees can run with a 5" prop. The instructions say 4,5" max. Or I can maintain a rich mixture.
José, the fuel matter is no rocket science. The Pee Wee tank can be used without any problems. The fuel pick up tube needs to be redirected to the bottom. I had to replace the tube as it becomes hard and when pointed to the bottom of the tank, you cannot assemble the tank due to the venturi tube interfering with the fuel pick up. I fill the tank with 1 ml of fuel. Before flying, I check how long the engine runs with 1 ml. I do that a few times to make sure it gives about the same running time. For flying, I count after starting until I'm sure I have about 5 to 10 seconds running time left after I launch the plane. This method worked for me. While counting, you can adjust the needle or throw some grass in the air to check wind direction.

Re: Flying wing free flight model
Hi Lieben, this is a good method,
About prop, Pee wee work so good with 5x3 " prop, for example wide prop reinforced tips, Pee wee is powerful.
I use this prop in my Skyrida.
Wooohhww I use also a 7x3" noooo is a mistake .... was a 6x3" prop

Looks like a lot of fun! Both the Fling Wing and Skyrida!

Good fun Arup. The field is not entierly flat and sometimes, you don't see where it lands exactly, then the search begins while you're walking through the field watching for a wing sticking up. Makes me think of Easter
José, your Skyrida flies really well. I looked at your vids a few times and I wondered where you hid the RC gear. In the plane's belly?

Re: Flying wing free flight model
Last week I decided to try some exiting video recordings. I fixed a key chain camera onto the fuse of the Wing Ding. I first fixed a piece of balsa with copper screws. The camera was attached with rubber bands. In order to find the camera after a rough landing, I wrapped a yellow piece of paper around it with a small plastic bag against oïl projections. The lens pointed backwards. I tried to let it fly with the prop mounted backwards but that wasn't working. With the prop mounted the normal way, it flew well.
After some circles and a few loops, the plane went down in a corkscrew with the engine running. When I arrived at the spot, the camera was gone unfortunately. The plastic bag and rubber bands were still there.
Although I searched the field afterwards, I couldn't find it anymore. To make a long story short, After several long walks in the field, I found the camera 5 days later, nicely planted in the ground, the lens pointed to the sky. After wind, rain and storm weather, there was still some life in the battery and all functions were OK. I had a total of 25 minutes of video, mainly clouds passing by and also the French Air force.
Are you ready for a wild ride?
