Sunday fun flying and a cool Stunt Rocket video
I just got a movie crunched from Sunday's outing. It was the calmest day I can remember at the fort, Wayne Bob and I brought a whole fleet of planes and flew all day. I flew five different planes, starting with my 1/2A streaks and Lil Satan, just to test the limits of my shoulder. The good news is, I'm back, no discomfort whatsoever, the bad news is... well, there is none. The only plane I broke is when I was gliding in for a landing, I went off the edge into the "Beach" beside the runway and hit the retaining wall. The fuse on my RW&B Streak broke, but it's no more than a CA job, so no tears. I'll post more when I get time, I do have some good stuff to tell, but here's a movie for a primer. It's Bob's Stunt Rocket. Anyone who's been to the Blackhawk models website has seen a picture of it. It has a 1951 Atwood Triumph .49 powering it. It also has a picture of Walt Musciano on the wing, and he's holding this very plane. He and Bob are(were?) good friends. I'm not sure if Walt is still living.
Sorry, I couldn't see a dang thing through the camera display.
Enjoy:

Yeah, it was Sunday, this year. Thanks for the catch, Larry. I'll have to edit and re-save the movie.

Re: Sunday fun flying and a cool Stunt Rocket video
Thanks Rusty! That made my night! Were the Atwoods spark-ignition engines? It would be interesting if sparkies made a comeback. They'd be so much lighter with today's battery technology and electronics. OEM parts are an issue.. but if you had a complete engine.. why not run it again!
Re: Sunday fun flying and a cool Stunt Rocket video
This Atwood has a glowplug, but Bob's fleet has plenty of sparkies too.
I've had a picture of that Stunt Rocket in my computer's desktop background slide show for years, before I ever even heard of him. I couldn't believe my eyes when I came face to face with it the first time last summer. He flies big planes the way I fly 1/2A planes, wild freestyle... only he does it better Lol

Re: Sunday fun flying and a cool Stunt Rocket video
While spark is cool and it really is neat to run them, they're very problematic. Bob's collection have been converted to solid state by him and he's done extensive tests and write ups in Stunt News and other publications. The runs can be very inconsistent in regards to the time it runs and how quickly it can start. Bob is extremely experienced with spark and he went up for a flight at Huntersville and it wouldn't start. Bob knew something wasn't going to be easily diagnosed and put it away until he had some time to look it over. He makes many of the parts himself for these engines and the metallurgy of these engines leave a lot to be desired. Anyone who has started a old sparker and had it backfire can really appreciate how it feels on the flipping finger. You can really learn some new words by the experienced. Ken
