Re: A Happy Birthday To KariFS
Hey thanks for all the congrats (and pinups )
It was indeed a good and happy birthday, even though there was no actual party. On my way back from work I stopped by at my mom and dad's place, they had got me a Weber grill tongs and spatula set. And a bottle of Talisker 10 Y.O. Single Malt. Yum. At home my sons had made me a birthday card and my wife had got me a comic book containing WWII-era Mickey Mouse comics. Never did realize that Disney took part to the war efforts at that extent, some of the stuff would not be "politically correct" nowadays... Interesting stuff in a historical perspective, and fun too. With the card there were two tickets to a gig at a small nearby restaurant, one of the old Finnish Rock'n Roll greats is coming to perform there on November 14th. So, no engines this time but great gifts nonetheless.
In the evening we went to pick up my Saab from the shop where it had had its noisy wheel bearing replaced (only 290,000 kilometers on the odo, they don't build them like they used to) and its "Saabness" restored. Glad to have its quiet gracefulness back, feels like a new car again. I still had to pay the bill, despite the birthday.
In the evening, after the rest of the family had gone to sleep, it was time to have a glass of wine and reflect the past year, or more like sit with a book on my lap and let my thoughts wander. Fell asleep in my favourite armchair, woke up at midnight, finished my wine, brushed my teeth, went to bed and fell back asleep instantly.
Guess I'm slowly but surely turning into an old fart, huh
Thanks again Friends

Hey Kari !!
Onnittelut syntymäpäivän johdosta!
P.S.: Finnish and Hungarian are said to sound similar....well, I would not confirm...the sentence above in my tongue is : Boldog születésnapot...just let me know if you have found anything similar

I've heard the same thing about the similarities... My wife and I visited Budapest once, and while your language sounds a lot like Finnish when heard from a distance, I could not pick up a single word that I would understand. Also, any text printed in Hungarian is completely un-understandable for me.
I guess the speech rhythm and intonation of our languages are similar, but otherwise I am not sure if there are any similarities.
Finnish language has its origins somewhere east of the Ural mountains I think, but, as my history teacher used to say, due to the unfortunate mistake with directions, our ancestors turned right at the Volga river, instead of the left, and so we ended up here instead of the shores of the Mediterranean

Re: A Happy Birthday To KariFS
Sure Kari, we Finnish and Hungarian folks s are said to have started from the same Ural area and made our mistake together in turning to the righ and not to left.
Once in the 1980-s I had a Finnish friend called Hannu Huatinen, and we had at least 2 things similar or in common: vodka and girls...a long time ago..
