Perfect day flying & Fearless Bob Z's maiden flight - pics and vids
It's been over 100F for a week and today was only supposed to be 98, so we decided to start late and fly till dusk. And it was a good decision, we may try that MO for the rest of daylight savings time. The wind gets much tamer late and flying into the sun isn't quite as bright. Our newest club member Bob Zambelli came with his newest build called Jezebel, designed by Lt. Col. Henry "BOO" Bourgeois that flew in Black Sheep Squadron on the 2nd Tour with Pappy Boyington. It was a beautiful twin engine model. It had new but old-stock Fox 19s on it. Or maybe .15s, I'll double check. They were not yet broken-in, but that didn't slow him down. Nor did the fact that he just finished it today before bringing it out to fly. This guy brings planes that haven't cranked or flown in 20 years and flies the snot out of them! Last year he dusted off his old Colibri 4 engine stunter and put on quite a show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZG35VGjBY0 This time was just as exciting with his new untested twin. See for yourself. Balls of steel, I say!
[Video tomorrow, sorry, but here's a video capture of the Jezebel]
Videos of more flights flying will follow Tomorrow. For now, here is the Oriental flying with its new 5 ounce tank which holds enough fuel to run where it truly shines, launching at 10.8k RPM. This plane is a graceful thing of beauty. It continues to please me.
https://youtu.be/TT0AeNM5KzY
Then again, I might have to call her Dirty Bird II if she keeps getting this dirty. I put up more flights in one day with it than I ever have before. Looks like I found a little tall grass there. That happened when I landed. She's a real greaser tonight. I'll de-fuel and clean her up tomorrow. I'm too tired to even unload the car now.
It gets big if you click the top
It's much more relaxing flying with three people tham with two. Plus we took turns with the RC guys at the field too. There was a nice breeze with enough clouds developing later on that it was pure stunt heaven. Thermals would switch up on us, but I swear when the Orio is on song, she doesn't care where the breeze is, just plows through it like nothing. I can fly high scoring flat laps in both directions and am finally mastering pullouts. Landing is my only nemesis. I am terrible at it. I put on bigger wheels for the grass, and it looks better but no difference in my bouncy landings. I'm either too hot or stalling.
I brought the Ukey for my warmup plane, but after one flight I felt good, so parked it. Wayne finished trimming his Intermediate Death Star, or IDS, and it's a really good stunter. He based it on the ukey after he redesigned and built the Uley G2, which didn't come out to play today. But here is a picture of the IDS and Ukey side by side.
I'll put together a movie of Bob's wild maiden flight and some of Wayne and me flying too. That'll be tomorrow. As for now, that's a wrap. We got the good out of this day.
Rusty signing off, good night.

Haha, Kim, it was titled "Crazy Bob" until the last minute, but I'm going to post a similar story on Stunthanger so I softened it a bit. I'm honored to fly in the company of such noteworthy modelers. Bob is the man who built the prototype Oriental for John Brodak, and kept up with the details of my buil... assembly. He brings other prototypes to the field sometimes too. The Vampire, I believe is one of them. And flies the proverbial snot out of them.
Thanks Andrew, it's good to know you're still following my flying circus. You are one of the guys I like to mention once in a while that urged me on and showed me how to build and fly, even while I was being hard headed and resisting good advice.
Hey Eric. You caught my lack of clarity. It's in the Youtube comments, but that is Wayne flying my plane in that video. The landing gives it away for sure. But I swear my V8 and hourglass are better than his on the bottom leg. He tends to compress them. Maybe being overly careful with someone else's plane. I can never get a good flight on the cam. Just the one where I ran outta gas.
Thanks for reading and replying.

Re: Perfect day flying & Fearless Bob Z's maiden flight - pics and vids
Rusty , Bob as you know is very impressive. I saw the Vampire at his house when he finished it years back. Over the top cool. He had a lot of input with the Brodak B-.40 and he still is flying the very first B-40 engine that was made. A lot can be learned from his skills and he's not secretive about any of it. Ask, and he will tell you. Anytime we cross paths it turns into a hour long conversation. If your ever interested in seeing some of the finest and best flying Scientific kits ever flown, tell him to bring them out. Bob and Walt Musciano are good friends and exchanged phone calls many times over the years. Ken

Hey Ron, yeah I wanted to reply to Ken and finish the videos, but I ended up finishing my Cox Engines Quarterly article till almost 2:00am and had to crash. All I gotta do tomorrow is clean planes and unclog a toilet Lol. So I can get back to forum posting and movie making.
Sending you a PM right now.

Sorry it took so long, bit here it is from last Sunday's flying at the fort. This is Bob Zambelli's latest creation, just finished this same day. He is not afraid to really let her rip as soon as it's airborne. He says these Foxes need breaking in, but that didn't slow him down.

Yes, we are blessed with a beautiful place to fly. Five miles from my home. Complete with grenade explosions and machine gun fire as a backdrop. You can hear it in some of my weekday videos. A Blackhawk made about 10 passes to watch us fly on Sunday, and recently a Predator drone flew over the field. This field is also an LZ for practice and emergency landings.getback wrote:HOOT HOOT !! I shared the field with this bad boy one day a couple of summers ago. He set her down with a hydraulic alarm one day. I was out there with my Shoestring learning the beginner pattern. They borrowed a 15" breaker bar and a 7/8" socket from me too.

It really goes where he points it. And he ain't afraid to really rip up the sky. Bob is a legendary name in modeling, engines, and building. He helped design many of Brodak's kits and ARFs and still has them and flies them, sometimes in competition. He has the first prototypes of so many, including the Oriental, which was his work. I got a lot of good advice from him when I built mine. We're lucky he chose South Carolina to make his new home. He was up there with the Philly flyers, president of their club for 20 years. Now we've got him.rogermharris wrote:Bob's twin engine plane looks like it's,way more than capable of anything you could ask from it. Love the sound of twin engines!!
I think his tri-engine Colibri flight was before you were with us. Here is a plane that hadn't flown in years. No easing into it, just flat out full crazy from the get-go. I didn't know he was on 70' lines when I set my camera up. Scared the mud outta me.
Here's the Colibri

And a couple more of his prototypes

And one of his friend, Walt Musciano's designs

Re: Perfect day flying & Fearless Bob Z's maiden flight - pics and vids
Well I must say I am disappointed to hear he was so close for so many years. Wish I had never put the hobby aside for so long. I will bee building a pinto this winter for my first .049 TD
I hope to get over to Philly some time to say hi.
So much to learn and understand....
At the moment it's killing me to not bee able to fly at least a couple times a week. Either schedule or weather keeps getting in the way. Been over two weeks since I have been able to get out. Need to maiden my " stunt trainer" that was finished over two weeks ago..!!..!!

He doesn't believe in mufflers. That Vampire is a sparky, and LLLoud too.
I enjoyed re-watching those. Thanks for inspiring me to post them.

I enjoy being a lefty. Unfortunately, I had to switch hands due to problems with the tendon in my left elbow. I now fly right handed and putting the handle back into my left hand sometimes becomes awkward now. I don't know which hand to use so I go with however I pick up the handle. Bob recognized that the first day I met him. Ken

I can't even brush my teeth with my left hand, but it does serve some great support functions for my right.
