Cox RR-1 It Runs...Video Just Loaded
Took time away from my Little Wulf project and put my RR-1 on the stand for a run. It took a while to find the needle setting between too much and too lean. It surged quite a bit, but I was cold and losing my light, so I just got some video, tached it, and called it a day.
Gonna try to load the video tomorrow.
WELL...just sat there looking at the computer, and said...reckon I'll go to the airport and load this video.
So, Here it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQWBWunpCFc&feature=channel_video_title

Hey Bob,
At this point I'm pretty happy just to have it spinning a prop. It was pulling mid-14's with a Cox Black 6-3, plenty for it to fly my Minnie or Q-Tee, so I'll probably let it a have an easy life just doing that.
Later !!!

Kim, you da MAN!!!! You continue to amaze and impress us mere mortals!
I noticed the RR-1 even had a early style glowhead on it as well!

Is that one that lets the bottom fork of the glow clip fit under the top fin? I liked those better, but maybe there was a strength problem or some reason they changed it. Maybe just for a tighter connection.Mark Boesen wrote:Kim, you da MAN!!!! You continue to amaze and impress us mere mortals!

I'll have to check...I've gotten so used to running the fork across the top, that I never thought to try.

The glowhead looks very much the same as the first version (small dia.) glowhead, only larger inside diameter to fit new cylinders that came out in '56.

Hey Indra,
Yeah, it was a fun evening. I can just imagine the poor guy that sold it to me, seeing his engine in the video and wondering to himself, "My gosh! What have I done?!"

Guess I need to try to find a spare for this one too, or a burned out body to convert. I'm gonna have to raise the caliber of my inventory/labeling to keep track of all this.
Thanks for pointing this out. Wish one of you guys would publish a "Cox Engine Guide for Dummies" book !

Too bad for him...... What you have done is run an engine that was designed to run. Never fully understood trailer queens or NIB 50 yr old engines. To each his own I suppose. We only get one go around before this stuff changes hands and we can't take it with us when we die! LOL.
If you are a serious collector please excuse my ignorance. Don't want to make any enemies here.........
I suppose financially there is some monetary advantage to having NIB engines. You would have to keep on buying and selling to make it worth your while though.
Anyway great video Kim! Thanks for sharing.

You should send a video of it to him.

I can see both sides in that, the guys who collect originals provide us with a historical glimpse of how things truly existed at the time the engines or planes were produced. Dealing in them and making any kind of appreciable profit is out beyond me, though some guys are apparently able to do it. I HAVE read horror stories though, where a collector dies, and his family, with no appreciation of the value of his collection, and no direction from a legal Will, simply trashes his stuff or gives it away to people who also don't have a clue as to what they've got.
I, myself, love to see and hear these things run! The older and crappier, the better ! (Of course, old and pretty is OK too! )

Thanks for the vid Kim. I love hearing the old iron run as well. I only have 1 model in my collection that I haven't run yet and it is a untouched NIB Green Shrike tether car still in the unmolested box with all the original gear. I keep it for sentimental reasons and it goes along with the steam engine and story from this thread:

Re: Cox RR-1 It Runs...Video Just Loaded
You're welcome! I'm glad everybody seems to like this stuff. Guess I'm gonna start dragging ALL the antiques out and cranking them up. I've been taking photos whenever I bring out the Test Stand, but think I also want my own little video library.
My Uncle Wayne has been after me to go ahead and fly the Stuka he got for us back in '68, and I've been putting it off because I din't want to see it smack into the pavement. So, I understand your sentiments toward the Shrike.
He's also got a Mini-Stunt...it was flown once or twice back in the 60's, and stays in it's box
except for visits with him and my cousin Bobby when we get together and talk about the "Old Days".

Re: Cox RR-1 It Runs...Video Just Loaded
I was just watching the video and I can see the needle rock back and forth every time you touch it. For running purposes, when not on display, I'd highly recommend the tube and washer replacement for the spring. It's surely sucking air making it impossible to needle happily. I bet it won't surge any more if you try that. An RR has to run smoother than any reedie... I would think.

Re: Cox RR-1 It Runs...Video Just Loaded
Good call, Rusty. It's still on it's stand, so I may go with a 5-3, and seal up the needle valve for a run tonight or tomorrow.
Some of the folks here at the airport have been subjected to my "Engine Babble" and have actually asked to see a couple run (I'd think they'd be sick of me AND my engines by now!), so I'm bringing some down here to run on Saturday. Got a Holland Hornet, Atwood, Spitzy .045 and some others I want to try. MORE Youtube videos !!!!
