Wanted New or Nearly New Cox 020 Cylinder & Piston

Post  halfpilot Tue May 19, 2015 4:50 am

I am looking for a new or newish Cox 020 cylinder and piston to replace the worn pair that presently power my little .020 Tee Dee. I believe all 020 engines use the same piston and cylinder meaning I could also use a pair from a Pee Wee. Please let me know what you have and what you'd like for it. Will need to post to the UK.

Thanks,
Simon

I source good deals on ebay for Pee Wee engines just for the piston / cylinders - The TD uses the same set. Small Cox Logo

Yes, that is what I decided to do in the meanwhile. I took a Pee Wee cylinder and piston from one of my better Pee Wees and got a piston rod reset tool to fix the slack in the old Tee Dee piston and rod.

I had hoped that the piston rod reset might also broaden the cylinder slightly to improve compression. No luck there though, I over cooked it and made the rod ever so slightly stiff in the socket in certain orientations. I am hoping this will loosen up with running but compression on that piston and cylinder set is still lacking. When I push the cylinder to TDC I can see the air bubbling out of the exhaust ports and there isn't much of a pop from the cylinder as I flip the prop over.

I decided to keep the newer set on my Tee Dee and the set with low compression on the Pee Wee. It's meant to be a lower performance engine anyway. I use the CNC aluminium carb on my Tee Dee which means no starter spring. That coupled with the low compression made that engine difficult to start. The Pee Wee with it's starter spring will probably fire up OK even with the low compression.

I use the aluminum carb bodies too with a thrust washer I am able to start them right up with a 1/2A Sullivan Hornet elect. starter - dont need to prime much a drop or two into the carb after that the fuel will pull right into the engine.
Can recommend 4 x 2.5 cox props or APC 4.2 x 2 for faster flying and of course the 4.5D x 2 for thrust.  Small Cox Logo

Here is a vid of one of my TD .020's with the Cox 4 x 2.5 - Lil Speedy scratch design.
Props are no longer rare thanks to Bernie he ran a batch to sell at Cox International.

Thank you the 4 x 2.5 really is a perfect fit for the Lil Speedy the APC 4.2 x 2 allows more unloading for more thrust and stead fast turns but just wont go as fast on the straights

I have to say, I am really intrigued with that model. I am a CL guy, but there is something about that little thing that really speaks to me.

Is there a kit or a plan available for it? I have some TD .020's that need some attention.

Ron, there is a real nice build thread over at RCU by a guy named pond skipper in the 1/2a forum. ( I think he is Clark Kent if  1/2A nuts Superman)

Yes that's me I use Pond Skipper handle at RCU and Amp Abuser at RC Groups

The Skorch is Lil Speedy's big brother.

There is a thread for just the Lil Speedy will dig it up was originally design for a TD .010 then later upgraded to the .020 which immediately turned it into a blistering ball of micro nitro fun. I had made the firewall a tad big for the .010 so the
TD .020 could be used on the nose, the battery was moved a bit more rearward to keep the CG on the money.

This one is the one:
