When I cleaning an old Cox engine I always make sure to clean the tank vents as well as the usual items. An engine that is "gummed up" with castor will often have clogged tank vents which makes the tank difficult to fill or vent excess fuel from the overflow.

A "pretty" engine won't function well with clogged tank vents. No Crying or Very sad

Good tip but also remember the engine won't even run at all if the vents are really gummed up.

Good advice.

I got a PeeWee a couple weeks ago, and I was told it ran great. I opened it up and the pickup tube was hardened and full of dirt, the venturi clogged, and when I put fuel in it (before opening) it all leaked out of the crankcase. Really old gasket.
Guess he ran it 30 years ago. lol!

Yes I realize that but how many "newbs" here do? I've never seen tank vent cleaning mentioned in any "trouble-shooting" guide. Have you?

No but then again it is assumed that the vents are clear to fill up the tank.

"Assume" is a dangerous word. It combines "ass", "u" and "me".

Not much reason to "assume" anything in aviation, is there? lol!

If you are a flyer then front induction engines are much better. No reeds and leaking self contained tanks. A good TD is hard to beat if running Cox. Beam mounts are easy to make and install engine. Reedies work but more to go wrong and if they sit need to be cleaned and stored well. Many Cox engines have sat idel for a long time.

If a #1 is your need the plane's "relief tube" will do. Airplane
