boys will be boys but..
The boys next door both play baseball.. and I'd seen them hitting rocks with their bat last year.. and soon after; I came out one morning to a broken windshield. I talked to their "Mom" about it when I saw her getting her mail. The Dad later marched the eldest son over and knocked on my door, to have the boy apologize to me. I told the boy that he was a man for facing up to what he'd done. Fortunately; the windshield got replaced when my car got hit by a semi-tractor in the parking lot at work.. The boys practice batting with a tennis-ball since.. but I've heard a few "cracks" lately.. and whatever they hit was HARD..
Meanwhile.. for the last year.. I keep finding these golf balls in my yard.. What would you do? It makes me cringe every time I find one..

Re: boys will be boys but..
I'd sell the golf balls for 25 cents a piece at the local driving range
Seriously though next time you hear them swinging away at golf balls, go investigate. Once you know for sure what they are up to then call them on it.

Line em up in a straight line facing their house and run them over with the lawnmower

Ive been there and done that, only I was the batter, it will stop when they are off to college. Hide your cars and shutter the windows, your doomed.

Befriend them and buy them a few baseballs. But, before hand, talk to their parents. You have a wonderful opportunity to teach them something good that could last a life time for them. I love kids and was actually one once, a loooooong time ago. It would be great for you to be a positive influence and make your world and theirs a better place. I wish you the best of luck with this. I know it is difficult but think of the possibilities. Best of luck.

Re: boys will be boys but..
..so Sunday, i'm working in the yard and jr. brings out his spud gun for a "test firing" i'm not really paying 100% attention, but i notice he's got the gun only a few degrees elevated, hes fired a couple grounders across the yard before so i'm not real concerned... BOOOM followed with a bang, the spud hits a neighbors house with a loud bang! I strongly suggest he get his butt over there ASAP and apologize, he quickly did and luckily the lady thought it was somewhat funny....i think we're done with "test fires" in the neighborhood!
Re: boys will be boys but..
Roddie , invite the little fugers over and have them hit balls AT there house or take them flying or have the local POLICE come by the next time they are out there with bats and stuff and have ,, ONE OF THOSE TALKS WITH THEM.

LOL! I didn't do spud guns till college! We called the compressed air version "confetti cannons" for use in the parades though. The only difference was the load used. (spuds would go over 300 ft at 35psi)
Introduce them to some marshmallow guns. That might entertain them enough to be less destructive. Lots of fun from a handful of PVC fittings.

Interesting.. the stories and the recommendations. These two boys are both nice kids. Their parents put the Fear of God into them! They're a young couple (early 30's) and his Parents owned the house they live in. "She"..(SWMBO) rules the house and (yard) with an iron mouth.. The dad and two boys usually do what she says. It's funny. He's a hardworking guy.. "pavement-crew" work when he can get it.. but if you know Rhode Island... you know the politics that dictate anything positive from happening. He's hustling/struggling financially like me. His wife has a good job and so does mine.. luckily.
The two boys are their only children. The four of them often help people in the neighborhood, who are in need in some way. They're right next door to us.. and we get along great. The only negative pressure can be found just behind whatever the boys have hit with a bat..

When I was a kid.. there was a HUGE Chestnut tree in our front yard. When the chestnuts fall to the ground, they're encapsulated in a soft but spiny shell. Some break-open exposing the nut.. and sometimes it pops out on it's own. The nut is about the size of a ping-pong ball.. except having the weight of a rock or similar projectile.. The neighbor kids and I had a battle one day.. and ammo was indeed Chestnuts.. well-aged and hardened.. A whole pail-full. We used tin trash-can lids for a shield. I don't know how far apart the army's were.. but it wasn't far enough. I caught a chestnut in the face/eye when peering from behind my shield. That was it for me..
Other "my bad's" as a kid, included riding my new mini-bike around the yard during the Spring-thaw. Let's just say that my dad loved his lawn much more than me that night.

As a boy, we had horse chestnut trees lining the street. We would have battles every year, but while they were still in full spines. Memories.............

Re: boys will be boys but..
About 15-20 years ago my grandpa found a golfball in his truck windshield. In the days before, the kids across the street were out in the yard hitting balls with a golf club. He walked over there to talk to the kids' dad, the dad called his boys and asked them if they did it but they denied doing it. Their dad said that "if they said they didn't do it, they didn't do it and that's it". Shortly after that, the kids were playing some game in the empty lot next door and their ball went over the fence into out yard. They went home and claimed that we wouldn't give it back which was not true as they never even told us about it. Their dad marched over here and started to throw a fit over it. Ever since then, we've never talked to them LOL (nor do they seem to talk to anyone else in the neighborhood).
I almost took out our neighbors window with a broken propeller. I was running a Black Widow when a old nylon prop flew apart, I remember hearing it bounce off the neighbors house (who were out floating in their pool at the time).
