Got in a single, somewhat wild flight with the Big B.O.T. this morning. Figured that the wind was gonna pick up (which it has) later in the day, so tried to hustle and get this long-winged sucker into the air.

Normally, you can expect more turbulent air in the warmer months as ground heating churns up thermals that can rock and roll a model, while winter winds are often straight and a lot smoother.

Not today. From launch, the Bird of Time got kicked around, making me 'hand-fly' it the whole time, with little stabs at trying to trim it. The Go Pro video shows a little of it, but it's MOST dramatic footage is of the Bird smacking a gate on landing.

Just as I was congratulating myself on the getting thing down safely, a swirling crosswind carried it sideways, making me dump the nose to try and get it stopped. It slid on through the snow and hit the gate anyway, leaving the Go Pro dangling from it's broken Scotch tape out on the wingtip. So I got a little repair/inspection to do.

I did get some good video though, with plenty of frame-capture photos to post.

I've now got several 'less-than-gentle' arrivals captured, so I may have to edit up a "B.O.T.'s Greatest Hits" video...

Wow, the earth really is round, How did you get it 250 miles up. Smile Fish eye lens maybe.

Nice job, but a bit of a bummer at the end.

Thanks guys. Overall, it WAS a good deal to get one of these things in the air---bumpy as it was...
I got away pretty easy with the damage, considering some of the gyrations the B.O.T. went through right after launch...that steep bank in the second photo was NOT intentional. I had everything shoved to the corner to save it, and it finally DID get out of the downwind wash from the house and barn. 9 foot sailplanes with no ailerons can be pretty lackadaisical in their roll recovery.

Yeah, at some point, I'm BOUND to read the instructions for my Go Pro camera, and dial it in to a slightly narrower view....though the "super-wide" setting DOES make sure I get the whole plane, even if it warps the world a bit!

Agreed! Flying IS Therapy, and I'm considering Rusty's Watt Field post to be the Official Declaration of the Spring Flying Season so, here we are !

I know why you and Rusty, and many others on this forum get out there and fly these model airplanes.  The anticipation, the thrill of lift-off, the shear terror when something goes wrong and you know that only you can save the day.

I knew it once, thirty or so years ago, and I hope to experience all of that again soon.  I'm to much of a whimp to build a stooge and brave the present local elements.  Hopefully Spring and my flying buddy son transfering from Denver will arrive soon.

Dude! Rest assured that, as we type these words, "All of That" is bearing down on you like a BN Locomotive!
It's gonna be a great year !!!!

Burlington Northern, I'm a Boston and Maine guy myself.

I have actually ridden behind a B&M steam locomotive in a coach with hard wooden seats on my way to Boston from my home town in Raymond N.H.

Got a bunch of HO B&M stuff, enough to outfit a good sized layout again.  But that's another story.

PS - Like your current avatar pic.

Thank You!

Funny thing about the train deal...I'm not too knowledgeable about them, but my long-time friend Al Painton and his family have careers with the railroads. Al lives right next to a main line that can average a train every twenty minutes or so, and his airstrip is also a few yards from the tracks.

Almost every time a train passes by, he'll stop to assess and sometimes comment on the engines pulling the thing.  They all look a like to me, but he'll tag them by models and who uses them, sometimes joking if they're somewhat miss-matched.
