Pop Can Glowhead Gasket
Hi there again. Just wondering, is there any problem associated with the use of a head gasket made from an aluminum pop can. Hope not. It seems to have upped the compression a bit, or so I was told...... Also that certain individual would aslo like to know can one use a piece of the pop can for a thrust washer as the gap will allow it nicely. Thank you.

Sounds like a great experiment! I've done a couple things that I didn't know I couldn't do !!! Why not experiment and report back ! Were you going to use the sides of the can, or the thicker bottom metal ?

Well i have never tried that but by using a can you can make a fixed compression diesel head and that i have done.

I think it should work well in either position. It's soft like brass and copper, more-so. For that reason it's probably going to compress after the first use as a head washer and may need replacing much sooner than copper. For a thrust washer it should be fine too. All it has to do is reduce the floating back and forth of the crank with load changes. Again it probably wears faster. I might try one since I'm going to tear down the TD after today's flying.

Re: Pop Can Glowhead Gasket
Ok, it was me, it was me. I am now ok to admit it as it seems to be a GO. Thanks. Winter here now, and getting bored already, so just looking for things to do. Since I took the butched up home-made glow plug conversion off to look at, I realized that there was no copper gasket. I do not have any, so I thought what should I do. After I was done, I looked at the prop and saw a space good enough for a layer between the crankcase and thrust washer. I may not run it till spring, but will post results when they are available.

I'd suggest that adding a spacer to the crank/thrust washer wouldn't allow for the thermal expansion of the crank as the engine runs.

Ok superdave. I will spec it out tomorrow and will post and see the recommendation. Yay or Nay. Thanks for the possible problem.

Re: Pop Can Glowhead Gasket
It would prob work in either scenario, I have to ask why though as head gaskets and thrust washers are cheap and readily available. The time involved to make them wouldn't outweigh the cost. I suppose if you were in a pinch and had no other option it would make sense.
Not knocking the idea mind you, just wondering if it's worth the effort.

Nitro,
I hear ya, I wasn't attempting to put anyone down I was just pointing out the time/cost ratio doesn't add up. I am all for invention and inginuity. In fact I am still waiting to hear more about your custom .010 throttle.

Re: Pop Can Glowhead Gasket
Well I suppose I should have reported back on that.
The engines now will not run with or without it.
I checked everything glow head gaskets all round NV assy Not blocked.
I am still investigating the causes but it is frustrating that my now only .010 will not run!
Damn hobbyist budget cuts that I am inflicting upon myself but who knows maybe I can spend myself out of this!

Re: Pop Can Glowhead Gasket
Time/Cost is not worth it, I agree. I just hate our postage up here, as well as I enjoy more making my own things that can be made vs. buying. I make anything I can. This also goes for much of my fishing tackle. If it can be made, it is made here, by me. You are right that the cost by making is not always cheaper, usually isn't, but being able to make it and have it work is more than worth it. Also being able to say that I made it is. This is only my opinion. I may just order some gaskets shortly, but will wait to try out mine... And wait I will, till the snow clears! Damn snow. Anyone down south wanna trade houses and jobs for a few months, preferebly around Las Vegas or within driving distance?
