Stuka bomb drop
Has anyone ever tried this Cox bomb drop system? Looks like they used it on some models.
Not the best design I would think. The third string pulls against this connection that looks to be designed to pull down rather than against releasing the bomb.
This particular Stuka came with a broken elevator but I found a replacement. It also came with a painted gunner (red and black) where most I have seen come with a put together shell that is all red, although I have seen pilots and gunners in tan and black flight suits.
This one also came with a black painted frame on the canopy, first one of those I have seen also. Could it be an early model? Despite the broken elevator I don't think that it has ever been flown or even fueled.

If I remember correctly, I was happy to have completed a flight from a FULL to EMPTY tank without hitting the ground with the plane!! The challenge of dropping a Flour filled plastic bomb was beyond my flight abilities back then, probably is still to this day!! Skip down a couple of threads. Someone is showing a plastic sheet Target that was part of the AT Texan with a bomb drop!!

Re: Stuka bomb drop
Thanks Craig,
I've been collecting info for years and to me sharing info is a big part of the fun of this hobby of collecting engines and planes has to offer. What fun is it to not know anything about what you've got or to not share what you've discover to others?
I've been very fortunate to have learned a lot about these neat li'l toys from some of the best experts in the hobby, who don't hesitate to share their info....including member of this forum!

Re: Stuka bomb drop
It looks factory to me Craig, if it isn't someone did an awful good job. Perhaps Mark has some information? I have replacement windshield and canopies coming but neither have the black frames. I will have to mask them off and paint to match.
I really like the landing gear configuration. It's spring loaded and designed to cam back absorbing the impact with the ground.
I still have to take it apart and replace that horizontal stabilizer. Looks like there are three screws that hold the sides together. Should I remove the canopies first?
BTW - I contacted the seller about this PT/Stuka combo asking if the pilot and gunner were inside, they responded that they didn't think so and the canopys were glued down. I had thought about buying the thing just for the canopys, but no longer. It's a good $35 buy.

Re: Stuka bomb drop
fyi, Aurora had hand painted pilots, they were done by workers who would take them home and paint them after work for extra income.

I would have to agree Mark, but again whomever did it, did a remarkable job - not a flaw anywhere. It had to be hand done as masking around those curves presents a problem. But with my shaky hands I will have to mask and spray.
They did a nice job on the gunner as well. I will have a tough job finding the pilot.
Just look at the detail on the goggles.

Re: Stuka bomb drop
Thanks Craig, it does add a little more authenticity to the model. I wish there was a cure to the yellowing effects on some plastics. Both my Skyraiders suffer from it. But the major offender was the spent fuel that was spread over the model and allowed to stay without being cleaned off.
I solved the missing pilot problem on my Stuka. I just moved the gunner up to the front seat. I believe that he's flight qualified anyway.

Re: Stuka bomb drop
I have the same Stuka, albeit with a retrofitted external tank because the nipples broke right off mine recently after pulling it out of storage. But I got it flying! And yes, I've dropped the bomb with the 3rd line before, somewhere in the 70's.
I had a new set of canopies as the original ones had yellowed but early signs of polishing with Neverdull show possible signs of some clearing. Found a new set of decals in my box too!

Nice try Mark - The unauthentic Mark would make one.
Mine is bent and painted black, but at least I have one.
But I'm sure that Mark has a couple of complete NIB Stukas hidden away somewhere.
Ahh, looks like Stuka mania has struck again......

Re: Stuka bomb drop
I was thinking, since you were planning to fly it and since a crash is likely, resulting in a busted antenna, you'd might want to sell it ahead of time? That or remove prior to flight, lol
Theres a guy on eBay who has been selling repro antennas for a long time now, made from metal for pretty good money. I'd think a nicely made red plastic one would be a good little money maker.

Re: Stuka bomb drop
Hahaha. Don't know if that was directed at rsv1cox or me, but I'm flying the Stuka tomorrow and there better not be any crashes. I do leave the antenna at home when I fly it... it's not glued in, it's for show. BUt you're right, each flight is a risk. It's not an acrobatic wonder plane. Once I officially retire this one I'll put on my new sticker set. Greg , don't know how hard the decals are to find but ... you could scan them and save for printing on decal paper and or even share them here for others to use !?!? Eric
