I have bought running automobiles for less, much less. The P-40 that just went for $230 was a relative bargain. But, that P-38 is nicely done and in great condition. This and a couple of Wen Mac engines that just went for over $100 is making our little world here much more expensive to participate.
But, I popped for this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/P-38-Lightening-Cast-Plastic-WW-II-Model-Airplane-/131386562704?pt=Diecast_Vehicles&hash=item1e973fd890
Looks a lot like the C/L P-38 that I built form scratch only much better executed.

I've seen the Wen Mac go for 1K+ in the box. I thought this one would go higher than it did.

I guess that it's a matter of who is bidding and how badly they want it at that particular moment in time.

Yep, it's always interesting to see the "high-end plastic" on ebay and what they bring. The early (c. 1961) Wen-Mac P-38 will commonly bring $800-1000 in "like-new" condition. This one was not that far off, but the painted pilot and decals probably hurt it.
Over the years I haven't seen a lot of NIB (early versions) last one I recall was probably 6-8 years ago and I think it was well over $2000.
I did see (one time) a ultra rare green plastic P-38 on eBay, I remember it wasn't listed properly, dirty, etc. and it likely didn't get seen by a lot of collectors. It sold for $888 in 2007, I swiped the listing photos for my web site. It was bought by a big collector from the east coast, the same guy that used to sell a CD of plastic RTF's...and out bid me!
