I was at a friends buying some items and noticed a semi complete TD .049 and asked about it. Guy says $5.00 its yours. Very dusty but had piston/ liner bottom end. I have some extra stuff home and bought it. Cleaned it up and hit it witth heat gun to free piston. Came apart easy and cleaned it again. Changed carb body installed back plate/ added head and all venturi parts. Engine was looking much better. Put it in mount and away it went. Not bad for $5.00 plus some parts just sitting around. I am always looking and once in awhile something good comes along. The TD is still a good engine for most 1/2A flying. Its to bad nobody ever cromed the liners to restore some tapered units. All modern racing engines have taper liners.

TD rebuild .049 Empty sweet deal

Don`t you just love those kind of deals?

It`s dificult to get cylinder coatings that will stick to these nd stay stuck. Another problem is getting it to coat evenly and thin enough.
I know some people that have tried it

I've noticed it is always the rod or a crankpin failure that does them in. I never really have heard of a Cox cylinder being worn out before this occurs.

You got a good deal though and it's great to see you have it running again. Using heat to work on it is the best way to do it.

Good point about croming liners. I bought my heat guns many years ago and it still works good. Many engines have freed up using some heat and old sock. Sock to hold engine. I install prop also to hold engine. You need to be careful with plastic cases but if you don't heat them directly you will be good to go.

Ditto on using heat by dankar04 and jetpack.

Had an engine locked completely a couple of days ago. Gave it a shot of penetrating oil and heated it up with a monokote gun. Freed right up.
