My New Career !!!
Well, it had to happen sooner or later, I guess. Continuing the strange tradition of my getting hired by the places where I tend to hang out (that's how I got my airport job), next Thursday, I shall begin training at Tailwinds Hobbies in Cape Girardeau !
So, ready yourselves for shameless plugs as I promote my new employer !!!!!!!!!
Think I'm gonna have to get me a white apron and a pair of those "half-lens" reading glasses like those worn by hobbyshop guys of ye olden times !!!

That's awesome!!! CEF has an "inside man" at a hobby shop. This could be the start of a movement!

OH YEAH !!!
The "Training"involves my relationship with their CASH REGISTER....I can have a pretty good knock-down-drag-out with the credit card machine down at the airport, but actually handling money is a whole different battle. I've been assured that there is no problem...so we'll see!

Cool! Congrats on the new direction. I trust that the training will go both ways and you will educate them on the need to promote Control Line flying, and to have a supply of the basics in stock, like control handles, bellcranks, and lines...

Congrats on the hobby shop gig!
As an experienced former hobby shop employee, I'd like to share an important training tip! Make sure you resist the urge to trade in your weekly paychecks for inventory! Not that it's ever happened to me.

That's what I would do. Especially if it was a "retirement" job.

Re: My New Career !!!
I was making my living while working at the hobby shop so I never spent whole paychecks but I did put some dimples in a paycheck or two here and there.Cribbs74 wrote:That's what I would do. Especially if it was a "retirement" job.
They were / are a full service building and repair shop for planes, cars. boats and heli's etc.. and it was easy to get backed up with builds and repairs so I made a deal with the shop owner that allowed me to do some of the builds or repairs at home and split the labor 60-40. I made 60% and the shop made 40% and I had the choice of either being paid in cash or in store credit. 90% of the time I chose store credit.

Re: My New Career !!!
Sounds like a good deal to me! The good thing about that is the dimples are easy to hide if they come off before the paycheck is written!

Good going Kim! When you get your hobby shop proprietor's uniform, the apron and glasses, we'll start telling our friends to be sure and ask for Ol' Mister Stricker. Just don't play with the trains too much.

Re: My New Career !!!
I'll try to handle being around all that great stuff! It may be a dicey deal though...I've already succumbed to a nice Space Walker they had on consignment! I blame the guy up at Buder Park who was flying the 1/4 Scale on U-Control !!!!!!
There'd be more than a little irony should it turn out that I have to get ANOTHER part-time job to support THIS part-time job !!

I HAVE to echo Mark's words here Kim... Having a "go-to" place for control-line flying activities.. would be a HUGE plus for getting people back involved with the hobby. Given our resources here...; http://coxengines.ca/
and http://www.exmodelengines.com/ there could be a renewed interest in running Cox engines in models of all sorts... be it "1/2A" control-line flying models,, RC models., boat models... or whatever... The new Hobbico/Cox Super-fuel formulation, may help to gain customer-interest in running their engines with confidence as well.
Re: My New Career !!!
Thanks Everybody! It ought to be fun, and yes, I DO intend to exert some control line influence on the local populace !!!!
I'm gonna see if I can set up a small T.V. running DVD's of assorted Control Line planes doing their thing...along with a sheetwing "demo" model with a control handle hooked to it's leadouts to provide a visual picture of how the things work.
I just want to be sure that I can move any inventory that Mitch and Patty might order on my suggestion!
Think this is gonna be fun!!
