CEF Reed Speed official video entries.
I was going to wait until the 31st to post this but with the crazy weather around the country I want to open the time window as much as possible.
To be eligible for prizes you must private message me your official video by midnight mountain time April 18. Video will include takeoff and landing. You are allowed to "whip" the model as much as needed to get it safely in the air and up to speed. When you are satisfied the engine has unloaded and your going max speed you will raise your hand over your head. The signal to start timing will be when you drop your hand. Timing begins the first time the model passes between the camera and the pilot, timing will be for ten laps (1/2 mile).
Here's the sample video:
When you private message the video to me send the URL code only, that will look like this:
https://youtu.be/c5HjoIOtmoU
This will make it easier for me to send the videos to the judges.
Please don't send video until after you have posted your qualifying photo on this thread:
https://www.coxengineforum.com/t6515-reed-speed-qualifying-photos-post-em-if-ya-got-em
I have three judges. I will average the two closest times for your official time. In the event of a tie all three times will be averaged. Judges decisions will be final. If you want your times I will send them to you but I won't divulge which judge gave which time. All videos will be posted on the forum when winners are announced.
Who are these judges, you ask?
First up is Larry Renger, AMA hall of fame member and chief designer of the Black Widow, Killer Bee, and Venom.
Next up is our own Paul Gibeault, champion mouse racer and multiple control line speed record holder.
Third is Ted Kraver, a long time scale and navy carrier competitor who most recently ran for president of NASA (National Association of Scale Aeromodelers).
What are the prizes?
First, second, and third will each receive a fifty dollar gift certificate to Cox International. Thank you Bernie!
I will also add up and average all official times. The racer who comes closest to the average time without going over wins a Black Lynx engine graciously donated by Matt of Ex Model Engines. Thank you Matt!
Please feel free to post questions and comments on this thread.

Re: CEF Reed Speed official video entries.
I read a 1974 article in flying models the other day that had a small feature of a Speed event hosted by very young Larry Renger.
I think we are in good hands. Thanks for taking this on Jim. I mean that most sincerely.

+1 on what Cribbs said, Jim. You are doing a great service to CEF to generate interest, attract new members and keep the forums fresh. We can't thank you enough.

Just for fun I entered the number of seconds between the start and finish messages posted in the video.
Hope you don't mind, I can delete it. Sandbagger!

Re: CEF Reed Speed official video entries.
I am afraid that this calculator is not very accurate.
The magic number to use is 180 for 42' lines.
180/44 * 10 = 40.909 mph
So 180/seconds * No of laps = mph for 42' lines
and 150/seconds * No of laps = mph for 35' lines
The calculator quoted loses accuracy through the unnecessary conversions from imperial to metric.
For example
1 metre =3.2808399 feet (3 feet 3⅜ inches). Therefore, 42' = 12.801599980541568029576816595043 metres = 504 inches. 12.8 meters = 503.93 inches
12.8016 metre line length gives a one lap distance of 12.8016 * 2 * 22/7 = 80.4672 metres
1 metre per second = 2.23693629 mph.
80.4672 * 10/44 = 18.288 metres per second
18.288 * 2.23693629 = 40.9090908 mph
In the calculator:-
The line length should have been 12.801599980541568029576816595043 metres not 12.8
Metres per second should have been 18.288 and not 18.27
If the calculator had been accurate it would have shown 40.909 mph

Rusty,
You didn't think I would post my contest planes did you! I should've used my sons mouser with the tee dee just to scare everyone!
Ian,
I will be using elapsed time not mph to determine the winner. I do want to thank you for doing the math as I will be using your formula to post the speed of the top three.

Re: CEF Reed Speed official video entries.
I was perusing the interweb and came across this measured speed for 1/2 A
½ A Speed 140.63 mph Carl Dodge Dayton, OH 9/11/05
On 42' lines that will be 1.2799 seconds per lap
On 35' lines - 1.0666 seconds per lap
Mmmmm!

Ian, Our event is more similar to the NASS 1/2A Profile Proto class.
Below is their current record holder.
½A Profile 108.78 mph Jerry Rocha Merced, CA 4/03/05
What does that calculate out to for lap-time?
Re: CEF Reed Speed official video entries.
On 42' lines that will be 180/108.78 = 1.65417158 seconds per lap
On 35' lines - 150/108.78 = 1.3789299 seconds per lap

I thought it might be helpful to show a video that clearly shows what we are NOT looking for:

Jim- the first post on this thread say we can whip the plane to get up to speed, I would guess the whipping stops for the timed period.

Yes, whipping stops when your hand goes up to signal the judges.duke.johnson wrote:Jim- the first post on this thread say we can whip the plane to get up to speed, I would guess the whipping stops for the timed period.
