Reed Speed Roll Call!
All right, we're coming up on this and I am trying to arrange for prizes. I need to know two things:
1. How many confirmed entries do we have?
2. Do you have the ability to video your flight and post it on the net?
I have a pretty good idea what an "official" flight will look like but I am working out a few of the details concerning the judging process. I will be happy to discuss that on a seperate thread.
I would prefer this thread be used only for a head count and informing me of your video ability.
Thank you,
Jim

Re: Reed Speed Roll Call!
Some "Roddie thoughts"...
I don't know "how" these models' flights will be officially timed... but to provide accuracy on the "contestants" end, I would recommend that; whatever camera is used be stationary... and placed back from the circle's perimeter at least 20 feet and about 4-5 feet above the ground.
I'm using a tripod. A 4 foot step-ladder would work too, and it's easy to fold-up and throw in the car, if your flying at a remote location. If your filming with a "phone".. make-up a simple "dock" that you can place the phone in, to hold it upright and stationary.
Jim, Would it be helpful for the contestants to mark a visual reference point in the way of a tall vertical "stake" halfway between the camera and the circle's perimeter? I'm just throwing some ideas out there...
It's quite possible (as long as the vids have audio) for the judge(s) to use an oscilloscope to measure the engine exhaust-notes' doppler wave timing with each lap. This method of timing would be extremely accurate for this application, by merely connecting the audio track of the vid.. to the oscilloscope.

I'm in and can video, but I think my paint job is what it is.
I need a break in the weather, and life is getting in the way. (daughter broke arm, wife due march 15) Funny how that happens.

I'm in and I can make a movie.
Roddie, these are good suggestions. It's important to think ahead. My brain didn't go any further than the tripod that I also will be using. Imagine several planes will have roughly the same amount of seconds, how to separate them. A pole in the ground or better Mr. Doppler could do a good accurate job!

...so its 42' handle to CL on plane, .008 minimum? Also max. height 12', or 15 degrees?

I'm in! I have a Bonanza built and an A-7 Corsair II to enter. Test flights will determine which one I compete with, though. I can make a video of the flights, too. I have no idea how to send, or post it, however.

Youtube.
Just make sure it is not going to get reprocessed for stability and such as that reduces the image quality and such. I remember there being check boxes for that when you upload.

Compete with both! There are prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and a special prize for closest to average time without going over.GUS THE I.A. wrote:I'm in! Re: Reed Speed Roll Call!
All right this is really starting to come together. I have two top notch judges lined up and am looking for a third. I have prizes three deep and a prize for average time. You will need to submit video to be eligible for prizes. March 31st I will post a video of what an official flight needs to look like, this is so judges can time everyone as fairly and accurately as possible. I hope to have three judges. I will average the two closest times from the judges for your official time and discard the third. In the event of a tie the average of all three times will be used. Judges decisions will be final. If the April 1-18 time window does not work for you pm me and we will work out for you to fly early. I can't extend the window as all video needs to go to the judges at the same time. If anyone sees my compiling results as a conflict of interest I will be happy to recuse myself from prize eligibility and compete for fun.
Stay tuned,
Jim

Re: Reed Speed Roll Call!
quick question...so it's ten laps, take off level out 4-5 ft. off deck after lap or two signal timer to start, time starts as you come around in front of camera and marker. After 10 laps can you make note of time and then do another ten on same flight?
