mixing fuel for these engines
I don't live anywhere near a hobby shop but I live near a bike racing supply shop. They sell methanol by the gallon and they have nitromethane by the quart cans. I have a cox engine that I had as a kid and my son (like most sons, they get into your stuff in the attic) would like to see it run. When I was a kid, I had a can of "Cox super power" fuel but I know they don't make that anymore. I'm not going to order fuel off the web because of the hazmat shipping. I would like to know a good formula for the fuel. Thank you, Rob

Re: mixing fuel for these engines
well, lets see:
cox made a blend out of methanol, castor oil and nitromethanol, as you might know.
a good ratio would be:
20% Castor oil (no less)
>12% Nitrometh, otherwise the engine will run too cold
68% methanol or of course less, if you choose a higher nitro content
hope i could help you out

OK! Thank you! I know I can get the methanol and the nitro, but where can you get Castor oil? I know it use to be used as a laxative, but my local drugstore said "studies have shown its not good to use it anymore, so we no longer carry it". Other then there, I have no idea where I could get it.
Thanks

Re: mixing fuel for these engines
ok, this might sound REALLY weird, but the admin suggest getting Gopher & mole repellent:

I'm not kidding. 100% castor.

Re: mixing fuel for these engines
You can use olive oil but castor is cheap on the Internet you can get it from sig for a fair price with shipping.
Re: mixing fuel for these engines
Repellent? that is bizarre! but i suppose it is a good way to get it! I'll have to go down to the hardware store and see if they have some! Thanks!

Re: mixing fuel for these engines
wait wait wait using castor oil out of that mole repellent? i don't know if i would do that. you don't know if it is 100% castor and or if it is degummed or not. just go have your damn pharmacist order you a bottle of castor oil laxative! it is still made for that purpose today ans still sell it new at my pharmacy! make sure they get 100% pure castor, none of the sweetened crap that my other pharmacy across town sells.

Re: mixing fuel for these engines
Well, I have bought that gopher/mole repellent for use in my yard and I do remember it saying "100% USP Castor oil". I found this out myself when I was spraying the lawn, it smelled quite familiar. I looked all over the bottle to find way at the bottom of the label "100% USP Castor oil". If it says "USP" that does mean it is safe to take internally, not that I would use the stuff out of the mole repellent bottle as a laxative but generally it is the same stuff as the drugstore Castor oil. When it says "USP" that also means that it is degummed and is the same stuff used in the fuel!

I haven't had to buy it from eBay yet since I can still easily get it. I believe if you are looking for castor oil in drugstores and locally you would want to look for B.P. (British Pharmacopoeia) castor oil, you probably wont find U.S.P. (United States Pharmacopoeia) Castor oil.
Re: mixing fuel for these engines
I order aaa castor and it's great but I am wondering if I should switch to clots benol for some of my diesel engines.

There are good reviews about the Klotz BeNOL. I haven't tried it yet. Someday, I'll make my local hobby shop order some. http://www.klotzlube.com/techsheet.asp?ID=2 If I do order Castor oil, its usually Bakers AA. Ordering Bakers AA castor is far cheaper then buying USP castor oil. Bakers AA is the same as USP, Bakers AA is cheaper because it doesn't have to get tested and approved by the USP.
Re: mixing fuel for these engines
yeah its the grade bakers AA that they use in most castor glow fuels. I do remember reading about that. I have not tried the klotz benol but i do know of a old flyin buddy who uses it in his moki 210.

Re: mixing fuel for these engines
OK, I went down to our local hardware store and bought some Sweeney's mole and gopher repellent. To my surprise, it DOES say "100% Castor Oil U.S.P." It was only $8.50 for the 32oz bottle. It was not easy to open, it had a cap similar to the childproof caps on medicine bottles only with this one you couldn't open it by pushing down and turning. I had to force it open by busting the cap off. I poured it all into a jar and it is not as yellow as I thought it would be, its almost a clear straw color. I did mix up some of that fuel using the formula GermanBeez left. The engine actually started up and ran! The oil was spraying out of the cylinder like I remember it doing from way back so it must have been working! Thank you all, for the help! ,Rob

Good for you! I'm happy to see that it worked so well for you!
i personally think that it's always exciting to fire an engine up that you just bought, or
you haven't run in some time.
if you have any questions rob, do not hesitate to ask.

$8.50 for a (US) Quart of Castor is a deal. You must live where they grow the bean. I know you have good beer.
