My first ALES glider contest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I entered my first ALES glider contest today. It was so foggy, we started at least three hour late. But we had some great hanger time.
We finally decided to cut the air time to three minutes and started the contest. Half way through the contest, the skies cleared to almost all blue. Then we went with the normal ALES rules withsix minute flights and 200 meters.
I started off very bad, no score the first two flights, then got on the board with my next two flights. I was just wanting to come home with my plane and with it in one piece, so to speak. I did do that and I didn't get last place.
Over all a great day! After the contest, we had an "All up flight", must have been ten of us went up at the same time. The last one down wins! I was fourth from last down, another great feeling. The second and third place guys were with in 30 seconds of me.

Yo Duke!
If you don't mind, could you post an outline of the rules for this contest. I know...I could Google it...but I'm a bit lazy, and maybe the other guys might like to read about it also...
Thanks,

Basics:
6 minute flight- from hand launch to touch of ground.
30 second electric engine run or 200 meters- whichever come first. hopefully at the same time.
and a spot landing messured from a 6" orange cone.
Kim- Dude get some sleep!!!!!!!

It sounds great. I've never seen anything like that. Probably the more you do it, the less you think about saving the plane and the better you'll score.

It's all about the practice for me. It was awsome when the sun finally came out. It looked like a bunch of buzzards circling the RC field for died planes
Sooooooooo much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got to try practicing this sometime. Always seems like, once I get everything up and going, I forget whatever plan I made and just play around the sky.
My two REAL passions, Sailplanes and Control Liners, are rare as hen's teeth around here...guess I need to go on a recruiting drive to convert some followers of this stuff...maybe buy a couple frisbies to play golf with Rory, then blackmail him into learning to fly R/C...
Oh, I DID finally get a full night's sleep. The 50+ gusts over the hill early yesterday morning brought me out of bed at 3am for fear of those ancient bedroom windows exploding in on me !
Sleep is good.

I'm glad you got some sleep.
ALES is real fun, you do have a partner/timer to tell you to come down. Sucks if you find a great thermal at five minutes though. It's challenging to me anyways, find enough air to stay up six minutes or find myself to far away after finding a thermal to get back in time.
