THE GOOFY THING ACTUALLY RUNS !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holy Cats !!!
After a considerable stretch of fiddling, all the while resisting the urge to load this thing into my sling shot and launch it toward yonder pond, I got this Testor's "Fly 'Em" (also know as their "Pipe Bomb Engine") to crank up and pretty well stabilize into a good run!
Since I didn't have a clue as to how it was held together, I resisted the urge to disassemble it, and decided to leave whatever goop was was in there alone, and let the engine deal with cleaning it'self.
I got a few good bursts out of it, then just cranked the needle valve WAY open to see if it would flood it'self...which it finally did. Closed the NV, burned out the flood, then slowly backed it out as I primed-burst-primed-burst-primed 'til it caught and ran.
I was using a Cox 5-3 "Safety Prop" and this little piece of junk flat took off!
I did have a tough time imagining a kid getting in any real flight time with the tiny "Tank" on the back of the engine. I was getting less than a minute runs with it so, in the good Redneck tradition, I just rigged a hose to it!
The silicone line of my regular tank would just fit in the big square hole (?) on top of the tank, so I filled the tank, drew some fuel down to the end of the fuel line, pinched it with my clamps, then released the clamps when the "Pipe Bomb" started. Ran it for about 20 minutes!
I may have to trust an airplane to this thing!

Not bad by my standards! I was shocked that it ran. Anyway, hang on to your Pipe Bomb... you may want to build a plane for it !
I really like launching different stuff into the air...and this thing IS different!

Isn't that how everything goes?
But then how does our glow fuel get here?

testors pipebomb engine
I had one of those as a kid, it came out of a control line bipe I think; I can`t recall for certain,I was pretty young. I wished I could find that old engine a few times over the years. Somehow, my very first 2 engines I ever had got lost in dads basement
That engine DID get hot in your fingers but it didn`t "heli" very well when it slipped out of your oily fingers ;go figure

Hey Jaspur,
Don't know your location, but you'd probably find one if you cruise the Swap Meets. I'd seen several...even gotten a piece of one in a lot of purchased engines...but never paid them any attention because of their general weirdness. Turn's out, they aren't bad powerplants...just a little troublesome to bolt to your plane!
Over the years, I've had many possessions mysteriously consumed by basements ! The good news is, as far as model airplane gear is concerned, you can usually replace them with the help of folks like those on this and other forums!

Re: THE GOOFY THING ACTUALLY RUNS !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to bring this old one up, because I was going to post to see if anyone ever got a damn Testors to run. I've a few laying around still, evil vile creatures they were to a kid. I think I got one to run maybe twice on a hovercraft. I've had the urge to try one again so I can feel like a man. Looks like it takes a professional to get one off and running.

Re: THE GOOFY THING ACTUALLY RUNS !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been able to run a few.
The most memorable was a "pipe bomb" which had the needle broken off inside the spraybar. It had been closed, so I mounted a syringe behind it and manually fed fuel directly into the intake.
Lots of fun.

LOL, I remember that!

Have to love fact that the later pipe bombs were basically more than 50% plastic

Not so much a "professional" as just being able to match them in their weirdness !!!!
I intend to fly it (I know, I've been saying that for at least a year now) on my Sanwa Q-Tee with an external tank lashed to the wing. Figure I'll just CA the end of the fuel tube in the square filler neck and let'r rip !

Actually the Testors "pipe bomb" engine was sold as a complete tanked engine called the Testors 8000. It was shipped upside down in the box.
