Cox Engine of The Month
Testors/McCoy .049 Pipe Bomb

Testors/McCoy .049 Pipe Bomb
Not sure if this one get's the same name as the nylon case as it's the cast (iron?) one. If I recall correctly, pipe bombs are made with PVC.
The cylinder is not burred as I originally thought. Compression is good. Runs for a couple seconds on primes, needle valve was closed when it broke off. Somebody might have a spare back plug/NV. I made a new reed from floppy material which passes the suck-and-blow test.

That looks like a high compression Cox head on the inside. Will a Cox fit it? What retains the reed?

Re: Testors/McCoy .049 Pipe Bomb
This thing went through a serious beating.
All the parts are a little bigger than an .049. The reed has no retainer - just slips under a lip on the back plug.

This thing should be called the fugly duckling
How does it run(if it does)

She runs!
It shouldn't run, but it does.
As described, the needle valve is broken inside the insert all the way screwed in - no fuel can get in through the nipple. I also removed the overweight broken spring starter.
I decided 2 second primed runs weren't satisfying enough, so here's what I came up with. Look anything like Soviet engineering? It runs for about 15 seconds; I could do longer with the bigger syringe. Cranked it up, dropped the igniter and slowly pushed fuel in. It wasn't just put-puting, it was turning some good RPMS.
You might say I hand fed it.

Nice way to run a nearly-dead engine!
You can always try to find a medallion-like spray bar, and use it as a replacement, so he'll be autonomous...

Re: Testors/McCoy .049 Pipe Bomb
Yes or a spraybar from an average English diesel like i used in my "custom SS"
Re: Testors/McCoy .049 Pipe Bomb
Yeah, I've got one of those, but installed in a control line plane... I never actually got the engine in my hands, but it's a screamer for sure!

Re: Testors/McCoy .049 Pipe Bomb
Yeah, it starts up nearly without priming, and I'm sure it peaks a 19k

Re: Testors/McCoy .049 Pipe Bomb
I forgot to mention the first time I cranked it I hadn't tightened the prop screw.
