Cox Engine of The Month

Cox Engine Of The Month sugestions
During the last weeks I distilled a few sugestions to eventually modify slightly the way the photo entries and the photo display during voting for CEOTM contest are carried out:
1) The monthly contest is to be organized by one of the staff members who does not participate to the contest that particular month.
2) Pictures are to be sent by PM to Admin or to the staff member on duty with the title that later on, in case of winning, will be displayed on the side bar.
3) When the 10 pictures are received, they will be posted anonymously on a poll thread accompanied with their title. The forum members can be informed regularly on how many pictures are submitted yet.
Voting will remain unchanged.
I think this method will largely contribute to the surprise effect and suspense, first to discover the 10 entries and then to find out their authors.
What do you think?

I vote for keeping things simple.

Re: Cox Engine Of The Month sugestions
I'll have to think about it. I would like to keep it simple and easy. I run the Cox Engine of the Month and I rarely submit a picture. I have the instructions posted in the moderator forum on how to set up the picture submit thread and the poll thread so one of the moderators can set it up in case I forget. I'll need to think about all of this.
Re: Cox Engine Of The Month sugestions
Lieven,
Apart from the anonymous pictures it's kind of how things are done already. The Anon idea is a good one as it removes any bias however, I am not sure any bias actually exists.

Re: Cox Engine Of The Month sugestions
I don't think that there is any bias - I have won some and also had the lowest number of votes. Some months I have found it difficult to decide which is the best - well, every month really.
However,
I think this method will largely contribute to the surprise effect and suspense, first to discover the 10 entries and then to find out their authors.
I do agree with this but then, again, I like it the way it is.

Ditto. No need to complicate it.
Re: Cox Engine Of The Month sugestions
I think we're fine the way its set up.
I've mentioned this before, but I'll repeat it, my biggest peeve is that we often seem to judge on subject only, not quality of photo. It doesn't take a real expensive camera, just a little thought and some good light. Most seem to think its more important to have a rare or unique engine then it is to have a sharp, clear, well lit, focused, interesting photo with an uncluttered background...but then maybe it just me, as the contest is called engine of the month, not photo of the month?

I don't see any need to change it. Seems to be working fine.

I agree, you can vote on an engine for any reason but you don't have to vote on an engine just because it is rare or exotic. I would rather display a well taken picture than something taken from a flip phone or a webcam.
Re: Cox Engine Of The Month sugestions
Wow, Anglo-saxon conservatism!! Ok guys, it was just a sugestion. But I think it 's not more complicated or more difficult doing it that way. Also, I think it remains a good thing, mentioning the chosen title with the picture on the voting site.

I don't have a problem with old flip phone pics, if it's well lit and focused, they'll work just fine...here's a picture taken years ago with my first Fuji 3.2 digital camera and I still think its one of my better pics.
I think we could send photos in anonymously, it would hurt, but I don't see the current process as an issue.
Been thinking of this old discussion a bit
Because the Engine of the Month has been favorite feature for 4+ years
I am really bringing this discussion back up, not so much to push for Overlords idea, but to point out for newer members (and some old timers), what wins, why, and to hopefully stir more discussion and participation on a higher level
Some months it is hard for me to vote because so many entries are great...last month I was really torn between three
I want to critique last month without intentionally hurting feelings....
This is meant to be constructive criticism

1. Great subject, cool airplane, out of focus
2. Good subject (a favorite engine) in focus, but I think backed up a bit to see more of the cool airplane would have helped. Unfortunately the remainder of the class had some better entries
3. Perfect entry, interesting craftsmanship, great photo, don't know if the sparkles were photo-shopped in but neat effect if they were
4. I loved reading about the development of this tuned pipe setup but think the better photo is one of the ones ON THE PLANE. This photo is not quite in focus and busy or messy...That said, I love pictures of running engines
5. No comment...seriously I do not get what the effect is supposed to be
6. Too busy, I like seeing these engines but I think better photo would be a before and after
7. The subject did not seem to me to bee the Bees
8. Liked it, funny, but needed to be cropped, and a propeller
9. AHA! decisions decisions, Everybody loves the 82nd Airborne, and one of Cox's most powerful engines, who could pass this entry up... and a clean crisp clear color photo
10. I love all the cox cars, this suffered from out of focus, better angle to frame more of the car so we get a hint of which one it is from our childhood memories
Here is a link to all the past winners....it is pretty easy to see that subject, while important, must be well framed and in focus
