What is the purpose of the thicker driveplate on the killer bee?

Probably cheaper (quicker) to machine compared to the earlier style where the back side was tapered, several Cox engines used that type toward the end.

Yeah, cheaper to make. Its as thick as the snap starter hex driveplates so they didn't have to change the setup of the tooling too much.

The KB drive plates can be made by turning the hex portion off on a lathe from a snap starter drive plate. I believe all new current production KB style drive plates are made this way.

Yep! We do this with out brass ones. The aluminum ones we sell are made from raw stock as they sell much quicker.
