Eric, don't rush the traveling engine just for me, I need a break anyway. I've been rushing my ass off at a snail's pace for longer than I can remember now.

Finally, it looks like I can make the deadline. Thanks to Lieven, Roddie, Gus, et al, I don't have to worry about looks. When it's finished I'll just throw a can of paint at it and post. The front end has taken forever. It got complicated when I insisted the engine be centered in the fuselage, thereby blocking the breather. So I worked around that and finally have something that looks like progress. A couple more hours tonight and a few tomorrow, up to 1:59PM EDT, and it'll be a plane.

Here she is now. Notice I've had to pipe the air into the back of the engine.:

Good idea Rusty,

I am using the same configuration engine. I ground a shallow channel in my motor mount outwards toward the needle valve. I was toying with drilling a hole through the mount like you did, but on my plane it would have been a pain to try and keep an opening around the mounting braces.

Tonight's progress, I got a coat of primer on, wish I could get a lot of sanding done, but i'll be lucky to get it painted Monday.

yep, the only can of primer I found had a clogged nozzle and squirted the paint, applied one heavy coat and I figured to sand it all off, but it will take all night to dry for sanding.

Yeah it dries pretty fast. It's fuelproof and ready to fly in 24 hours if kept warm and dry. I used it to seal my waterslide inkjet Yak decals this morning and I'm going to apply them tonight.

12:38 EDT, an hour and 22 minutes to spare. I am out of gas. It's a plane. It will fly like it is. If I can't do anymore finishing without DQing, I'll fly the bare balsa.

Here are some pics of the final sprint:

Now over to the photo qualifying thread. I hope JP lets me in without paint. My back is broke and I gotta be at the field with the Yak in 8 hours.

When we post our pictures of the speed planes, are we allowed to keep working on things? Like the engine? Trimming? Balancing? Anything off limits after posting the picture?

I think the airframe is all that cannot be changed. I see no reason to not put details in such as paint and trim. It is expected that balance, trim, etc. will be altered between the first few flights and the "official" flight. Record all attempts, you might change something that causes it to slow down!

Yes,
Switch props, glow head, move leadouts, shift balance, do whatever it takes to go fast.

Well done everyone.  Hand Shake  At the speed my Cadet build is going I'm glad I didn't attempt a built for this competition.  Although, reading what some of you have done it shows that you can achieve amazing stuff when put under pressure.  Pity the Cadet isn't modelled on a full size plane, or I might have been tempted to have a go.  Other than that, I do have Sig Deweybird and Beech Staggerwing kits which someone mentioned might have qualified.

At least with this race (unlike the Tach Race) I wouldn't have to send my stuff half way around the world again.

I look forward to some stories about maiden flights and eventually seeing some videos of your attempts.

Rod,
That staggerwing is a great plane. I would suggest leaving the landing gear off and fly over a grass field. Just make sure you use good leadouts lol!
Here's my staggerwing thread:
