DT 250?

yep, got'er running today! And I did get my CEF racer cut out, I'm too tired to post pics, I got a lot of work to do..and its gonna be disc golf weather Sunday! hopefully I can be playing while the paint is drying. I don't think I'm gonna be in the running for the beauty prize, but I'm gonna have a airframe for RACING! I ended up doing a later model P-51 (sorry Rusty) I was gonna do a early one but couldn't get the tail fuselage right and messed up turtle deck. Now I'm debating about the front end, I like side mount look for scale, but I don't want drag and since its a speed contest I want to go fast.

Mark, wing loading is for stunters, so no need to worry much about that if it'll take off. Low drag is good. Any dreams of a beauty prize for me just took another hit. IMO, you and Lieven are dominating in the looks department. I love the look of yours, it looks like a real racer.

Well, like I KNEW I would...I'm running right down to the wire with my racer...with no good excuse other than blatant laziness, mixed with "Builder's Block".  I've cleared all day Sunday for this little slab of wood, and will finish it in 5-Minute Epoxy and Magic Marker if I have to.

I've always had an extreme fondness for Rivets, with it equally rivaling even the 'Big Iron' in coolness where my opinion was concerned.  For me, it is STILL the most evil-looking Goodyear/Formula 1 Racer ever to polish a pylon.

In 1977, I was witness to Rivet's last complete set of races at Sturgis, Kentucky.  A few weeks later, Bill Falck would die when Rivets entered an unrecoverable spin during an 'Air Start' in Cleveland.  At Sturgis, the racers were sheltered in open T-Hangars, and I stood within a couple feet of the tiny airplane as Mr. Falck removed it's cowling to adjust things around it's engine.  I remember later noticing that even Rivet's sound in the air was different from the other racers: a kind of acoustic howl, possibly due to Mr. Falck's all-inclusive cooling/induction system that allowed Rivets such a smooth snout.

It is another entry in my log of eternal regrets that I did not have my faithful Instamatic camera with me.  Just getting there and back home broke me, and it's hard to believe that I was running so close to the bone as to not have enough money for a cartridge of film.  So, I missed the chance for a 'Selfie" with this one-of-a-kind airplane...a hard lesson in learning to manage my money!

With enough balsa stock to build a small house, I STILL found myself with no 1/8 sheet in the long boxes.  So, it's gonna be 3/16 all around, and if the thing just flys, I'll be happy.

So, unless somebody drives off a bridge or otherwise causes themselves trauma, as my family is so wont to do, I should have some "Wet Paint" photos Sunday night!

Looking sharp Kim. You should be able to sand that 3/16 to nice slippery airfoil.

looks good Kim, I think we're about tied for progress, I got a kids D-day party tonight, but should still get a hour or two, then 2-3 Sat. and 3-4 Sunday.

I'm thinking total time to complete 19-12 hours? Does this sound about right?

Heck...who knows....I get mad at it, I may finish it in half-an-hour...

Got tonight, if Rory doesn't talk me into some coyote shooting, and all day Sunday.  I'm such a goof for letting something this much fun get so close to the dead-line.

The long tradition continues....

Must keep looking at inspirational photos....

One of my all time favorites, had a Cox Rivets as kid and years later when I flew Q500 I designed a "T" tail racer, yellow wings and tail feathers w/ red fuselage. Looking forward to seeing it! In the words of a famous Nebraskan: Get'er done!

ARE YOU READY FOR A YAK ATTACK?

I'm doing "Czech Mate", a highly modified Yak-11 for Reno racing. Here's where I'm at now with my build. This weekend I should be able to finish up the details and get her covered and ready for a final pic before Monday midnight. I was only able to work on it a few hours a night but it looks like I'll be able to sneak under the wire.

I hope it flys well as there are a bunch of slick looking builds I'll have to......... well, "CZECH MATE"!

Mike

You can see the wider than scale chord as I tried to meet the minimum square inch area but it wasn't enough so I also had to stretch the wing span a bit. I also scaled up the horizontal a bit because,..... better safe than sorry. As I get more used to what works and what doesn't I can start whittling it down a bit for next years entry.

And Monday too. Sounds about like me.
I have the Wing and fuse of course, trying to decide if there is any need for beam style doublers, so I cut them out of ply. The nose isn't really functional but it would look pretty stupid if it broke off. It also would fall out of the 12" minimum fuse rule. Guess that answers my quandary about that. The firewall fits nicely and the braces for it are next. The rest should be pretty simple. I spent way too much time getting the engine to fit in the front cutout.

Looks like I have a few hours Saturday and Sunday. I was going to fly the Yak Sunday, but wind forecast is 21mph, so looks like I've got some extra time.

No Eric...... it's the same model I've been working on for 3 months.  Embarassed  I'm just finally shooting the trim color.

I really hope that your engine troubles have gone away. Keep at it.. you've still got some time to work with. Good luck!!!!!!!!!

Wow, RK, that's different. Nice.
Everyone's planes look so simple and the more I work on mine the more detailed it gets. Making the engine breath intake air through the back of a Killer Bee backplate presents some creative induction ideas.

Hey Roddie,

Looking good! I like the gold. Did a little silver myself.

I got a lot of details done today and got a little painting done. Just gotta finish the covering the fuse, get the controls put on and build the landing gear tomorrow.
