Cox Engine of The Month
WTB: Space Bug Crankcase and Tank.

WTB: Space Bug Crankcase and Tank.
Looking for a crankcase and complete tank for a space bug. The case I got is almost snapped in half and the tank Venturi nut must have broke off with the threads as well.

GO: It might be more cost-effective to buy an entire engine.

Re: WTB: Space Bug Crankcase and Tank.
I figured that might be the case. I'd just hate to see this engine get thrown out. Well most of it. The crank cylinder and piston are still good. Plus the tank is still usable, just need a way to secure the back. Which happens when it's mounted. I guess if I could at least get a crankcase it would still be able to run.SuperDave wrote:GO: It might be more cost-effective to buy an entire engine.

HORRORS!!
The first rule of old engines is you NEVER throw out parts! They come in VERY handy when matching up replacement parts. Further they make excellent "swap" materials the might even generate some $$$$$$.

I wouldn't throw out the whole thing. The crankcase is generally unusable. Unless JB Weld could repair it. I may try to repair it somehow though. Don't worry. HahaSuperDave wrote:"I figured that might be the case. I'd just hate to see this engine get thrown out." - GO

Re: WTB: Space Bug Crankcase and Tank.
Remember, those early cranks are getting pretty hard to finds, its good to have parts. Also the thin wall dual port cylinder are scarce as well.
Re: WTB: Space Bug Crankcase and Tank.
See, that's the icing on the cake right there. I only bought it for the cylinder. Which was wrong. It was a number two thin wall. Last time I buy an engine on eBay without asking questions. I'm only out a few bucks. But it'd still be nice to see the engine run at least.Mark Boesen wrote:Remember, those early cranks are getting pretty hard to finds, its good to have parts. Re: WTB: Space Bug Crankcase and Tank.
Bummer, at least its a thin wall. Does it actually have a #2 stamp? Look at exhaust ports, do they look a little narrower than what you normally see? If so it could be a Space Bug Jr. cylinder.
Re: WTB: Space Bug Crankcase and Tank.
It's actually stamped 2. And the exhaust looks normal to me. It's still a good cylinder in terms of being usable. And the crank looks good and like you said, that's getting rarer.Mark Boesen wrote:Bummer, at least its a thin wall. Does it actually have a #2 stamp? Re: WTB: Space Bug Crankcase and Tank.
The Space Bug Jr. had a slightly lower, not as tall exhaust port, they don't produce as much rpm, but are easier to start and have a little more torque to swing a bigger prop.
Re: WTB: Space Bug Crankcase and Tank.
Well I've currently got the case clamped and the JB Weld is curing. I doubt it's strong enough to hold together running. But it's worth a shot.Mark Boesen wrote:The Space Bug Jr. had a slightly lower, not as tall exhaust port, they don't produce as much rpm, but are easier to start and have a little more torque to swing a bigger prop.

probably not, but hey it's fun to try. I'd keep surfin eBay, i bet you can find a SB or SBJ with a broken crank, cheep.

Really? Are their cranks fragile?Mark Boesen wrote:probably not, but hey it's fun to try. I'd keep surfin eBay, i bet you can find a SB or SBJ with a broken crank, cheep.

Not overly, although I wouldn't spin it up 20K+ or anything (good luck on a SBJ)
Usually you see them with the spinner stud snapped off inside the crank.

Re: WTB: Space Bug Crankcase and Tank.
they're a lot thinner then the bee's crank, a figure 9 would often cost u a crank. Thats why u dont see a lot of em around. They were also a one piece crank with threads cut onto crank, when they came out with Bee, the crank became thicker and used a screw or stud on prop.

Whew, you had me worried there! The trash is too good a place for obsolete engine parts unuseable or not for the reasons I stated previously.
I'd have an experienced "Coxoholic" exmine the crankcase and advise you of the practicality of a J-B repair. It may or not be worth the effort.

Re: WTB: Space Bug Crankcase and Tank.
The problem with the jr crankcase is the screws go through the tank into the crankcase. The original space bug, the screws go through the crankcase into the tank.crankbndr wrote:Maybe this would work?

Re: WTB: Space Bug Crankcase and Tank.
Here's what we're dealing with.
And I know it looks dirty inside the crankcase but I cleaned as much excess JB off with a q-tip as I could.
I don't have any screws for the crankcase or the prop nut so nothing is buttoned up. But hey, I guess it could display well.

You could always carefully drill out the screw holes.crankbndr wrote:Maybe this would work?

True. Although a very sharp drill and a drill vice would be required. The screws are harder than the aluminum crankcase and the tendancy of the drill would be to "skate" off the intended course.
I still see it as an engine best used for parts only.

Re: WTB: Space Bug Crankcase and Tank.
no, you'd just be drilling thru the aluminum case, you could come in from the back side of case...just makin' the holes deeper.
The SB has screws going into tank, with the head on the front side of case, the SBJ has the tank screws going in case from the backside of tank, like a Babe bee.
