Awesome Rod.
A friend of mine did gigs at 55 to 62 yo flying all over the Northwest (USA) singing and playing piano for a band called the Spent Roosters. He said he didn't even make gas money in his own airplane!

Not sure about John Prine.  Can't say I know him & Steve has never mentioned him that I recall.  Every musician has a lot of influences.  Steve writes most of his own songs, usually with a real-life story behind them.  Harmonica & Mandolin are his main instruments with a bit of Dobro.
Here's another of Steve's songs.  He wrote this after meeting Laurence Deverall, and ex British soldier who was shipped to Australia for the Maralinga nuclear tests, now living in Canada. Laurance lost a leg to cancer as a direct result of his exposure to the radiation.  He organized a nuclear veterans' convention in Canada and invited Steve to come over and play.  I couldn't go due to family and financial restraints, but Steve wrote this song on the plane going over.  This is a studio recording from one of our albums.  Not much to look at so read the comments.  These tests are a dark blot on our history and displaced many Aborigies from their home territory.  Many returned to the contaminated site following the "clean-up" which Laurence was involved in.

Too bad, but an infamous period. I know of it by the surplus P-51s used as test articles and later reclaimed and exported to the USA for private owners. I always wondered if they were safe when they were restored and guys were sitting in them for hours on end in the '80's! Lead underwear, anyone?
Your singer is a great harmonica player. I'm hacking at that too, not as easy as one might think at first.

What, your friend is John Prine!?

EDIT: Oh. I didn't notice the video, or that Gardner already mentioned John P.

Seeing this thread has a lot about music, just thought I would have a little boast.  Went to see Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell at the beautiful (but run down) iconic Palais Theatre in Melbourne AU.

hobby - My "other" hobby... - Page 4 Palais10

The acoustics are just magic.  Emmylou described is as "a jewellery box".  Luckily the government has just promised money for restoration.

The gig was just superb.  Emmylou & Rodney's voices haven't suffered after all these years and were right on the money for the whole show.

hobby - My "other" hobby... - Page 4 Rodney10

Mix was wonderful, with vocals not overshadowed by the instruments.  Had their touring band comprising of pedal steel, keyboards, lead guitar, drums and double bass.  Couldn't fault it.  (Guitarist is an Aussie you know lol! )
While I'm not that familiar with their material, I've always loved Emmylou's beautiful angelic voice.  She didn't disappoint.

I'm off work today. I hurt my back on a gig this past Saturday. An 8-band outdoor festival with around 600+ people attending. Our band was just before the headliner.. so I didn't arrive until the event was well underway. The "Boggestow Fish and Game" club is where it was. I had to park down a trail in the woods and pull off/park in the brush. Easy in the light of day.. but when it was time to load-out, it was dark and my truck's driver-side was facing into the brush. After pawing blindly through the briars.. I step back to open the door.. and my boot catches a vine or something.. drunken Shocked and down Roddie went.. hard on his a$$. I broke my fall somewhat with my arms.. so I wouldn't hit my head. I think I actually heard a raccoon laugh. Anyway.. I drove out of the woods and up to where my gear was.. and forgot to load a crate of cables. I had to drive back Sunday morning to get them for another gig Sunday afternoon. Rolling Eyes Thankfully nothing was missing. The Lou's Café gig (local to me) yesterday from 4-8 p.m. started off ok. The place was packed.. and there were 20-25 bikes parked out front against the curb. My wife Lynne arrived during the 1st set. By that time, I started to really feel the ache in my tailbone/a$$. Lately we've been playing two long sets with one 30 min. break in between. Set two was a long set for me. Stick a fork in Roddie.. he's done. Lynne helped me load-out.. and we jetted before I even got my pay. I take Naproxen Sodium for aches and pains. It's not helping much this time though. I'm thinking I should prepare an ice-pack, lay down and watch a movie or something. Sitting here at my desk is probably not helping me.

Oo ouch! You have my sympathy and a wish for a quick recovery. Sounds like you broke something that can't be put in a cast to heal.  I've pulled muscles in my lower back that will lay me out for two or three days, can't stand, can't sit, hurts to just think about moving. Rotate between ice packs and hot pads till the pain goes away. I am now very reluctant to pick up anything heavy with out a helper. Doctors (around here) nowadays are very reluctant to write Rx for anything stronger than Naproxen, because of abuse and addiction to anything stronger. Besides they don't want to cure you, just keep you coming back!! Here's to a fast and complete recovery

Thanks much! I'm no stranger to back/spinal/cervical pain. Neither are my dad and two brothers. We're all long-waisted and tall. Sometimes I'm better off "walking it off" rather than laying down. I'm feeling better over the last hour or so. I got out some scrap balsa to make filler-plugs for my foamie.. and I'm listening to Mozart in my workshop.

Thank You! Thumbs Up Does your Daughter front the band she's in? Are there any clips of her band posted publicly? Where was the venue with Three Dog Night? StilBurnin opened for them at Indian Ranch in Webster, MA a few years ago when I had taken what was to become a temporary hiatus. I did attend the show though. In 2013 I got back with the band, in time to open for Marshall Tucker there. It was very cool!

She doesn't sing in that band since she got Married but, Yes , She sang the Patsy Cline and Brenda Lee songs. I have a clip of her singing Brenda Lee's Sweet Nuthin song at the 3 dog night show.I"ll have to dig it up and post it here. Very Cool about Marshall Tucker too,

Eric, I could use some pain meds right about now.. that would have me talking to a plastic owl. Paranoid X-rays yesterday revealed a compression-fracture to my L-1 vertebra.. age indeterminate. My tailbone is ok.. but when I fell.. I wrenched that area of my spine, which has had previous damage. I'll be out of work at least until Monday. The band has two gigs again this weekend.. and I can't afford not to play them.

Well.. I survived the two gigs; today and last night. Took it easy and didn't lift any heavy cabs. Next weekend is a single Friday night gig.. which is uncommon. We don't usually play Friday nights. Going back to work tomorrow after a week out. I am thankful for an understanding employer. This past week being home; I had a little more time for the forum.. Smile and rekindled the "Phred's Phalt" build that I started last November. That and the Rod-O-Gyro have been languishing on the dust-covered card-table where I keep models/model-projects in queue.. in the basement workshop.. over near the heating oil tank. I call it; "Table X"  Paranoid. Precision measuring tools are kept there.. There's a cat litter box (1 of 2) under Table X. This has been a brief look into Roddie's life.. in the Twilight Zone... inspired by "Rod Serling".

Figured I check-in with what's been brewin' over the Winter with StilBurnin'. I'd like to say we've been working on originals.. but there's a great up and coming Southern Rock band called Preacher Stone and we love their songs. Our singer Steve is a dead-ringer for the lead-vocals.. and the music just fits our band so well. In the last three rehearsals we've learned these two songs.. almost well enough to play out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONV93HDs7c8

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7Mn0HRupVQ

We also learned CSN's "Southern Cross". We've been rehearsing in Steve's new 12' x 24' shed/man-cave out behind his house.

hobby - My "other" hobby... - Page 4 1-30-111

Our lead-guitarist Tom (he's a lefty).. check out the antique Coca Cola cooler! The acoustics are pretty good in that little shed. The exposed wall insulation helps to deaden sound reflection.

hobby - My "other" hobby... - Page 4 1-30-112

Hope you liked the songs. We'll be playing them this season.

Thank You! We've got a gig coming up on March 12th at PlainRidge Park Casino in Plainville, MA. We made our debut there last October and played again this past January.

The casino is Massachusetts' first.. and is under a lot of scrutiny. The regulations are off the charts. It's smaller than the other area casinos (Twin River-RI, Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods-CT) There are no real table games.. which are very popular (not to mention better odds..) no smoking.. no shopping and only a choice of two restaurants. Twin River casino is only about 10mi. down the road, in Lincoln, RI. We'd like to play at Twin River and hopefully that will happen soon, but we're already booked well into this year.
