Why you got into the hobby of CL and RC...
A friend of mine started a similar thread on my forum and I thought it would be great to see your stories.
My story:
I fly RC because my late grandpa shared his love of flying with me. Since I can't afford a full scale as of yet, I fly from the ground. I've been dreaming of flying since 1975, when I was 1 years old.
This past Father's Day, I shared my love of flying with my boys, with an instructor of course.
Here is a pic from yesterday at our local little airport's annual fly-in and car/bike show. The blue mouths are courtesy of Blue Coconut Slushies from Sonic
My wife said I can get my license after she gets her nursing degree. I do plan on getting my Grandpa's Cessna 172 in the pics. I've been in contact with the last 2 owners. It looks like this now.
When I get it, my plan is to paint it like this, which is Hallmark's Sky's the Limit ornament this year. The Beech on the right was my Grandpa's 2nd plane, and family favorite, but was totaled years after it was sold.
I got into cox engines when I was my oldest son's age. My grandparents got me a PT-19 for Christmas one year. My dad and grandpa flew/crashed it and I never got to fly it. Later I nagged them enough and they got me a Cox Top Gun F-15. A year ago I found my old Cox engines, as the planes were long gone. I wanted to show my boys how RC/CL was back before electric flight, as I fly electric RC now. My son Brandon and I started to really enjoy these little engines and now we have ~50 with very few doubles.

According to my dear old Mum I had a 'talent for mischief'
which is probably what lead to my 3 decades of being an International Playboy.
However there are only so many super Models you can sleep with on yachts before
it loses it's glitz.
So here we are then toy aeroplanes YAAAAH

I first saw Cox engine when I was 10 years old (1979). I was from the country with closed door policy at that time and the thngs "Made in USA" are very rare and seldom seen.
I made friend with this mechanic who own cox engine and flied when he was free as I am really amazed with this little engine.
I got my first baby bee only in year 2000 when I came out of my country and went to Bangkok, Thailand.
Now I have >50 cox engines (Including NIB Thermal hopper from Bernie) and still collecting.

Re: Why you got into the hobby of CL and RC...
my interest came from curiosity on how the different components on model aircraft and there engines worked. My curiosity was sparked by my grandfathers Sig Kouger mk2 that he build in 1992, he always had it in a little room in his basement and i would always ask to look at it. It is now in my room hanging above my bed
If it was not for that plane i probably would not be as interested in rc planes, cars, and engines as I am today

I flew in a real Ryan ST in 1947. I have a picture showing me, leather flying helmet and all, sitting in the front cockpit. From that day forward I have been fascinated with aircraft.
Modeling came shortly thereafter when my parents gave me an Ohlson & Rice .23 for Christmas on year. Running that O&R on the test mount proved to be quite a challenge for my buddies and I. Soon we we ALL were running engines in our parent's basements. (remember basements?
Then came a progression of CL models most noteably Sterling S-3 "Ringmasters" and larger engines like K&B "Green Heads" Torpedo's and McCoy "Re Heads". Soon all of us had caught the "modeling bug" supported largely by our newspaper paper routes in the early 50's. Once we had graduated from high school then came military service followed by college, marriage and careers. Modeling then became distant consideration after children began to arrive.
Cox engines entered this picture when I was given several from a friend's estate. One of them was a Baby Bee .049 which I still own. Smaller planes and engines then became more practical due to space consideration as we were still living in small apartments. Once we had our own home RC became very appealing.
But that's enough of how I got started. And what a "ride" it's been for all those years!
