Post  Cribbs74 Tue Aug 20, 2013 1:34 pm

I just purchased a gallon of Powermaster 30% Nitro 9% oil (castor/synth) The breakdown is as follows:

9.6oz Nitro
2.88oz Oil
19.52oz Methanol

By my calculations I will need to add 3.52 oz to bring the oil to the 20% that I want.
32x.20= 6.4oz
So the 32oz gallon is now 35.52oz.

My question is do I need to subtract 3.52oz from the Nitro and Methanol to figure out the new percentages?

If I do that the Nitro goes down to less than 20% and that doesn't seem right at all.

You're starting with a gallon (128oz.) or a quart(32oz)? Or you're pouring off a quart from the gallon to modify...

I always have to retrain myself every time I do the mixing. The volume of the nitro and meth would not change and need to be figured using the new total volume to find the%

I'm an idiot...... Yes 1 gallon 128oz

So the new numbers are as follows

38.4 oz Nitro (30%)
11.2 oz oil (9%)
78.4oz Methanol (61%)

I need to add 14.4oz of oil to bring the total oil content to 20%

What I want to know is how to calculate what my new Nitro content is.

I think you divide the nitro volume by total volume

38.4 divided by 142.4 = .2696% nitro

I have used existing weights and then rounded %

Add 4.3 oz of Castor oil and you will get this

For total Glow Fuel volume of 36 US Fluid Oz's

~~~~~~~~~~
54 % Methanol = 00.15 US Gallon or 19.4 US Fluid Oz
26 % Nitro Methane = 00.07 US Gallon or 9.4 US Fluid Oz
8 % Synthetic Oil = 00.02 US Gallon or 2.9 US Fluid Oz
12 % Castor Oil = 00.03 US Gallon or 4.3 US Fluid Oz
~~~~~~~~~~

Total Oil mix is 20 %

My calculator doesn't do fractions of percentages!

You, guys, make it yourself ever so difficult using floz's, oz's, gallons - US or imperial - pounds, stones, inches  and feet. I do not get all this.

Generally speeking, your new obtained total quantity of liquid with the added castor will always be your new 100%.

The quantities of nitro and methanol that weren't touched, are still present as the same quantities in your new mixture. So percentages of nitro and methanol can be calculated using the rule of 3.

To find the new total oil quantity, substract the known nitro and methanol quantities from your total volume. The oïl percentage can then easily be calculated in the same way as above.

I'm with Lieven. Here's how I do it:
I use power master master basher. 20% nitro, 14% castor synth mix. I need to add 6% oil to the total volume to bring the oil to 20%. I hold a metric ruler next to an old rubbing alcohol bottle and fill to roughly 9.4cm with fuel. I then add Klotz to bring the volume to a hair over 10cm just to be safe. A little extra castor is better than not enough. This drops the nitro to between 18 and 19%. this is my favourite fuel and it's only $8.99 at my local hobby shop.

Excel fuel mixture calculator --- takes a while to download from Bernie's site and requires that you have Excel on your computer.

Hey Jim,

Normally I use SIG 25 or the Master Basher 20%. However this time I wanted a little more Nitro. Still powermaster brand. The gallon was 20.99 so it's cheaper than the quart.

Thanks for the tips much appreciated. Klotz is synthetic isn't it? Or are you using Klotz Benol.

Klotz Benol. 20.99!? My shop has it for 39. Curious to hear how it works.

Lol, no I meant the gallon of Powermaster 30% was $20.99. I buy Benol for around $8-10 for a pint.

Edit: My mistake.... I didn't see the period after Benol. Anyway, yes Powermaster 30% was $20.99 it's actually $23 or so, but I got a military discount.

Right! I wrote that in my notes.

I added the oil last night. I only had 10oz of Benol castor so I had to pour some off into a quart bottle to mix it.

Appears to be good. Thanks to all who helped

Sure did Jim,

It works excellent. I had to do it by the quart as I didn't have enough Benol to do the entire gallon. I have run 4 different engines on it. Great runs and no compression loss. I haven't torn one down to check ball socket play, but it looks promising.
