Cox Engine of The Month
Cox Wings F-15s

Cox Wings F-15s
As stated previously, a friend gave me a couple of Cox Wings F-15s. Apparently, the Fed Meyer department stores not only sold Cox airplanes at one time, they also sold replacement bodies for kids to keep their planes going. My friend picked a couple up about 30 years ago, and never did anything with them. As you can see, he probably overpaid for them, especially the white one. He gave them to me to see if I could get them flying again, and I had just about everything I needed on hand to get them flying again. I had a new product engine with the grey backplate that I could put in the silver plane, and I acquired a white backplate in a parts lot a couple of months ago that I could build up for the white plane. I bent up new gear from some 1/16" music wire and made up handles using a couple of plane correct handles.
I pulled out the Windex to clean the dust off the planes, but the glue for the stickers on the white plane was brittle and the stickers came off. I cleaned it up as much as I could, but there was still a lot of residue on the plane. But, the silver plane cleaned up great.
For the white plane, I tried a couple of hobby shops to see if I could find some Stars and Bars stickers, or anything that would be appropriate, but no dice. So I just cut some blue trim sheet to pretty it up a bit.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find the original style of three bladed nose cone the planes came with. As soon as my order from Bernie arrives with the proper wheels, they'll be ready to test fly. Hopefully the wheels will get here before Saturday, since I'm going to pick up Don for another flying session then.

Bernie has the hub and spinners that should work on those. Good job cleaning them up! Now go fix the Shoestring and do some serious flying......

Re: Cox Wings F-15s
I have the plastic spinners Bernie sells and tried them on, but they're two bladed, and they just don't look right. The correct spinner is a three bladed spinner and is long and pointy. I have to keep an eye peeled for a while to see if any show upon eBay.Cribbs74 wrote:Bernie has the hub and spinners that should work on those. Good job cleaning them up! Oh, I thought they were the rubber style. I don't know much about RTF's

Re: Cox Wings F-15s
He's looking for a 3 blade hard plastic spinner..... pretty tough to find, especially in a specific color.
They're done!
Well, my package with the correct wheels came in (Thanks, Bernie), and I mounted them. The planes are now ready to fly. But, MAN!, are these pigs. The white one weights 7.5 ounces and the silver one weighs 7.4 ounces. Gonna take a quite a few feet to get these airborne on the product engines. But, they're not stunters, so I guess it's just as well. Can't wait to try them out this Saturday.

Re: Cox Wings F-15s
My Top Gun instruction manual says string length between 12'-15', I tried 12' and it was too close... crashed it. I'd go with 15'. I still have to repair mine and give it another shot.
Re: Cox Wings F-15s
15' is really short for an .049. They must be crazy heavy.

Re: Cox Wings F-15s
Ya... they fly like pigs too
I actually think they don't have much lift... all centrifugal force...

Re: Cox Wings F-15s
if it was a calm evening, you might go 18'-20' but make sure the engine is turning up and glue a nickel to outboard wing.
Whoops!
I couldn't find any info online other than that the planes came with 50 feet of line, so I made the lines 25 feet long. Guess I'll re-size the lines to 15 feet tomorrow.
WingingIt, any chance I could get a scan of your manual? I looked around online and couldn't find a copy.

Re: Cox Wings F-15s
I did that with my first one in the 80's... stalled and crashed... plane destroyed. I flew another one a few months ago on 12'... too fast... no experience... crashed... plane broke, but I plan on fixing it somehow.batjac wrote:I couldn't find any info online other than that the planes came with 50 feet of line, so I made the lines 25 feet long. Re: Cox Wings F-15s
Take this for what it is as I have no experience with Cox Wings aircraft.
If 12' was too fast 15' wouldn't be much better. Most .049 CL is done on 35' so if you are saying the plane flies like a brick I would start at 20-25' and lengthen or shorten from there. I would also throw some tip weight on there as Mark suggested.
Even a heavy plane will go in circles just fine. It just won't stunt and it will take off really slowly. Once flying it turn circles quick enough.

Re: Cox Wings F-15s
Pigs! Pigs I tell you!!! I took these out yesterday with the son and the friend who gave them to me. I had the engines tuned up to the best they'd give the night before. Man! These things take forever to get off the ground. And they barely stay in the air. I don't know how Cox sold so many. But, I haven't given in. I WILL make them fly. I'm going to increase the throws a little, and give it an engine boost. I'll order an SPI cylinder and piston to see if that'll give enough boost to give these things acceptable performance. If that doesn't work, I have a Medallion that I can make a mount for and we'll see how they like THEM apples.
I DID remember to take the camera with us yesterday. But, I forgot to put the SD card back in.

Re: Cox Wings F-15s
Well, my original 25' lines were too long, the recommended 12'-15' seemed too short, so I decided to compromise in 18'.

Re: Cox Wings F-15s
I fly my heavy plastic PT-19 on 35'. It used to take a quarter lap to get airborn, even whipping it. Then I put a Killer Bee in it and it jumps off the ground as soon as you launch. In lieu of a real KB, just put that SPI P/C on it and either order a KB backplate from Bernie or bore the venturi you have. That should really wake it up. And use a two blade prop for flying, and the three blade for showing. Something shorter than a 6x3 prop. A 5.25 or 5x3 will make a big difference too. Besides, SPI doesn't really even help at the low RPMs a 6x3 limits it to.

Did you ever find a spinner? I found this one you can have:

It's a three blader that should paint up nicely.

Re: Cox Wings F-15s
Nope. Faithfully watching eBay hasn't turned up a 3 bladed spinner. That'd work a treat on the planes. I just got my SPI piston/cylinder set and the KB backplate. Built up a new engine two nights ago with the SPI P/C, KB backplate, a new crankcase, an .049 rebuild kit, and a new glow plug. With that spinner the plane would be ready to go.
