I was boneheaded today. Much much more than usual.

I spilled water thin CA all over the dining room table (first bad) gluing up a reduced size S.P.A.D. wing http://www.spadtothebone.net

Tip: Apply a sheet of plastic such as trash bag to the dining room table before beginning a "quick" project.

I then decided to use Sig Champion 25% to clean up the CA (second bad) and discovered the varnish was even less resistant to nitromethane and methonal than CA is. The CA came off my fingers, but not off the table at all.

I then used a razor blade to remove the CA and paper (third bad. Yea, did I mention I spilled on some paper? Does that make fourth bad?) The razor blade cut through the softened varnish like a sharp knife through room temperature butter, effectively stripping the wood.

The table looks like .... insert your own word. The finish was failing badly on the table already, so you think my wife will notice?

Maybe I should post this as "guest" to protect the guilty (me)

She's at work till who knows when.

3 washing of Dawn dish soap and water, followed by water rinse rag and allowed to air dry to remove that particular "glow fuel" smell from the table.

Phil -

I've enjoyed your posts and contributions, but the bottom line here is, "You're dead!!" We will all miss your contributions and comments. Divorce is very expensive, but what is in store for you will probably be much more quick and merciful. Sad Goodbye

Option 1 (your only chance of survival) : Honey, I've been thinking --- the dining room table has been looking pretty rough lately. What say we find something nice this weekend to replace it, then I'll take you out for a nice dinner for Mother's Day (doesn't matter if you have kids or not). See how easily I worked that in!

I am fixing spaghetti (her request) and told her already. She did flip slightly when she saw it, then I pointed out other damage that was already existing and suggested refinishing the table. She is sold on this idea now.

I think I will survive this time as long as I don't do any more really bone headed things in the next few weeks.

Our 10 year anniversary gift is taken care of already for next week. I need to get a mother's day from our daughter for her, and today is her birthday (it's a triple whammy every year for me).

I hate to laugh, but....... lol!
Sorry. I've done it too. Once I poured some solvent into a styrofoam bowl on our 150 year old dining room table. Nuff said. I've never scrambled so fast to contain imminent destruction. Luckily it was my great grandfather's table and not hers.

Quite laughable!

This table is about 5 year old. I am very disappointed with the quality of the furniture, the dining room set is holding up OK but the finish has failed in several places, the living room set has trim pieces that fell off, veneer peeling, and more. Too much money for this low quality.

Buyer beware: veneer over press board will come apart.

Veneer over rubber wood, or other solid non-decorative wood is all on the finish quality, but at least will hold up physically.

So, I ended up tearing the wing that apart...It still had wet CA glue on the inside! (may, june, july, august, september, october...6 months)

I salvaged the horns and servo, tossed the rest.

Zero moisture inside, I guess. Nothing to kick the CA.

So is she.

I think that Minwax walnut + red mahogany oil stains applied as two separate layers is a fair color match on the maple flooring scraps I have. Minwax polyurethane is way more durable than whatever was on the table to start with, even though I don't think very highly of it (I have used much better, more durable, but I can't get them locally).

Looking like a spring project at best.

I need to turn these two bathroom vanities into a basement work area for planes.

But wait!

The US government ought to place warning labels on CA like they do tobacco products.  Laughing

"WARNING": frequent and continued use of this product can result in; lack of attention to regular household duties, lack of sleep, frequent dining in the workshop, selective hearing, furniture refinishing and possible loss of marriage. Use with care.

CA is indispensable if your special project includes the quick but lasting glueing of your thumb to your index finger....probably the only objects apart from balsa wood parts that CA glues really fast and eternally..plus maybe the balsa-to-finger glueing is its other comparably succesful application, it usually happens first before you manage to glue balsa parts to each other..

And then there are those government warnings posted on beer.

Don't wonder how many beer drinkers heed them?   Huh...       lol!

Then maybe government warnings should appear on containers of ammunition.     Laughing

When will common sense prevail over "Big Brother"?

As footnote:

Applicator tips allow CA to be appied with precision accuracy.

Tower and Brodak carry them. (witch see)
