Cox Engine of The Month
Tank (ed) up
Tank (ed) up
I put a n other engine in the FF5 last week but only managed a very quick flysee on Saturday PM.
It was very cold and quite windy so I guess less than ideal but I came away feeling
completely underwhelmed.
Anyway, one of the reasons seem to be the plane has been on a crash weight gain which has
negated the extra performance from the engine. When I used the Sullivan 1oz before it
was on the old timer so weight wasn't so much of an issue but having just weighed it I was
surprised to find it topped the scales at 50grams
Obviously this is too much.
I was thinking a travel shampoo type bottle do you hero's have an other ideas?

An airless party balloon with a stopper in it holds a couple of ounces and weighs a gram or two. If you put it in a film canister, a few more.

JB,
Those 1oz tanks don't weigh that much, but you may save a little if you went to a shampoo bottle. Any chance at getting rid of a servo? I assume you are using Lipo's
What type of covering did you go with?
Ron

Yet another English expression I've never heard. John comes up with some classics too.

Yet another English expression I've never heard. John comes up with some classics too.
John omitted a capital letter and an apostrophe!
It should have read "Bob's your uncle" - Bob being short for Robert but a lowercase "B" is also acceptable.
It is used to describe the means of straight forwardly obtaining a successful result; for example, 'left over right; right over left, and bob's your uncle - a reef knot'
No one is sure of the origin of this phrase but there are three possibilities:
The expression is often said to derive from the supposed nepotism of the British Prime Minister Lord (Robert) Salisbury, who appointed a favourite nephew, Arthur Balfour, to several political posts in the 1880s. Balfour had considerable talents and went on to become Prime Minister himself, but his early political appointments were considered inappropriate as he showed no interest in public work and at the time preoccupied himself with philosophy and an active social life. It is unlikely that Arthur Balfour would ever have become a celebrated politician without the patronage of his influential uncle.
A second interpretation has that it the phrase derives from the slang term 'all is bob', meaning 'all is well'.
A shoplifter’s assistant, or one that receives and carries off stolen goods. All is bob; all is safe.
The slang word 'bob', with the 'shoplifter's assistant' meaning, had been in circulation for some years at that time
The third potential source is in a music hall song. Follow your Uncle Bob. The lyrics include:
Bob's your uncle
Follow your Uncle Bob
He knows what to do
He'll look after you
Now we also have another "Bob" related saying.
You've got two hopes! - No Hope and his brother Bob!

I've just placed my order for "A Redneck's Guide to Speakin' English." Hopefully it will help me understand what's going on.

It came out of the packet weighing 45 grams but to enable the clunk to 'clunk' it needed 5 grams added to
it, even then because of the very short piece of tubing it wasn't always submersed in fuel.
I've gone for a bigger (2oz) shampoo bottle it allows a decent 55mm length of tube so no issues with
non clunking and all up it weighs 19 grams so I've won an ounce back off 'Porky'.
As for covering I originally used Solartrim on the Bacaruda and had a pal laugh cos it's like using lead.
He gave me some lightweight iron on which is a lot thinner I used it on the Bacaruda's wing tips and
all over the FF5 but I don't know what its called.
PS
No lipo Ron I went for the good old 120mah nimh so I can't save weight there cos I already have.
PPS
The Bob's Your Uncle above comment wasn't made by me, I use Robert's yer Muvva's Bruvva.

Re: Tank (ed) up
Thanks, Ian, that was a great explanation regarding "Bob's your Uncle". What a relief, I was afraid my uncle might get bobbed.

Re: Tank (ed) up
English is a strange language and we have another use for "bob".
A bob was commonly used instead of shilling. So twenty bob was a pound, twenty one bob was a guinea and a crown was five bob.
Half a bob was a tanner.
Two (bob) and a tanner was half a crown - the "bob" being omitted when including smaller values and so articulated as "two and a tanner".
Of course it is common knowledge that a bob (shilling) is twelve (old) pence and being described as not the full shilling referred to your mental capacity. Being compared to a nine bob note was also not considered complimentary!
Also a bob could be made up of two tanners, four threepenny bits (pronounced thruppence!), twelve pence, twent four halfpennys (pronounced aypenny!) or forty eight farthings. Going back even further, a bob was also three groats often called fuppence.
Alas! Now a bob is only 5p and not 12d.
I do hope that has been made clear!
