Re: New idea... Virtual Tach Race
If it is just for a data set then the tach accuracy is the only important variable. The prop, the fuel, any spiking or doping of the fuel, the individual needling all can sort out if they are accurately recorded.
Of course the only win is bragging rights in this setup. Bragging for having all your engines perform similarly, bragging for having the fastest, bragging for breaking the most cranks, bragging for having the slowest, bragging for the largest throttle range.
Is this the tach in question?

The other important variable is judging for fairness, do we require a video? Most phones will do a 30 second clip which should be enough to record a large block written of the setup, and the tach itself reading against the engine.

Video I think would need to be required. Judging would be put to a vote on CEF.
Re: New idea... Virtual Tach Race
Great, I have neither the correct tach nor fuel then...
(The turningy style of tach are no good by the way, I prefer the Hobbico ones, much less sensitive to different light conditions)

No good because of a slight sensitivity?
Sometimes you get what you pay for, sometimes you don't. I bought an Anderson tachometer for $30, and it lasted just over a week. The $9 Turnigy tach has been serving for a year now.
Re: New idea... Virtual Tach Race
Me n the Boyz are happy to set our slightly
More expensive YS's up with them.
Reason being they are (IMO) as accurate as those
Costing 10 times more.
Light sensitive?
Yep
If there's not enough light they don't
Work as ya'll saw in my recent dragon
Extreme vid.
Anyway I think we're all getting a bit carried
Away, surely we just need to decide on
Nitro percentage and assume everyone will
Be honest. It'd just be for fun, we're attempting
World peace or anything serious are we?

The Hobbico/Tower ones work better and are about $20-25

Re: New idea... Virtual Tach Race
Surely as has been said this would be just for fun and not for prizes apart from letting everyone know what roughly your engine runs therefore so long as we agree on a nitro percentage all the same would that not be fair would the fuel brand really make that much difference ?? I run model technics 20 or 25% then add castor would modern tachos all be that different I understand mine is at the bottom of the range in price but it is digital lets all remember it's for fun the serious tach race gets sent off to u boys over the pond for exact testing and prizes

Re: New idea... Virtual Tach Race
The prop is very important I think, the load varies a lot depending on the blade size and shape, so it would have to be of the same make. Maybe a maximum nitro level could be used and that's it in terms of rules. Personally I would like to see a video too, the sound also says something about how an engine runs and maintains the rpm for more than just a quick burst.
I've tried to make a log for some of my engines, including their weights, but there are still some empty spaces to fill out;

Kris
That's a lot of engines u have could only find 3 on that list I have
Loads of good info on there though impressive !!
I agree with your post prop should be standardised as to fuel a max nitro percentage ... Yes I agree and videos are a must I think not just to prove the results but also to make it fun to participate and watch
Everything else may not be that important ie tach brand (so long as its digital) location and fuel brand
What is everyone else's thoughts on this
Fair or to open to variation ???

Re: New idea... Virtual Tach Race
This is what I am gathering so far.
Fuel, use any mix up to 25%
Tach, any manufacturer
Prop, use a specific one like a Competition 6x3
Video the run and send it in, also send notes on fuel (I don't think we need to involve temp/pressure)
CEF forum will vote on the winner of each class.
Sound Good?

Re: New idea... Virtual Tach Race
Let me know if everyone agrees on the rules.
The last thing would be to pick a deadline for the videos. Videos can be emailed or placed on personal Youtube accounts. Just need a name, date and fuel mix on the video.
Thoughts?

I'll happily +1 that sounds perfect lets more people run it
I have but only one question where can I find the classes and rules what is and what is not allowed for each class ???

Re: New idea... Virtual Tach Race
Classes... This is something else we could vote on.
My thoughts...
• Unlimited (Tankless and has to have a reed)(Like my Killer Widow, Killer Bee or custom engine)
• Unlimited w/ Tank (Mouse?) (Tank and has to have a Reed)(Venom, Xtreme, Blue Flame or custom engine)
• Stock Performance w/Tank (Black Widow, Golden bee...Any Cox original Tanked performance Engine, except the Venom)
• Product Engines (Any Cox original Backplate/Tank non-performance Engine)
Not sure where a RC-Bee or Dragonfly would fit in... I assume Stock Performance Engines?

Re: New idea... Virtual Tach Race
Throttle competition is also about the range of throttle control, so the stable slow "idle" and flat out need measured. The lowest idle, the fastest run, and the largest range between idle and flat out are available awards. Throttle type needs specified, home made throttles require available plans or complete photos of the setup and individual pieces.
Mouse 1 per the AMA rules, tanked engines
Unlimited, includes tanked and tankless
Stock, the idea being you take a new engine, break it in properly, and test it.

Where would you put a stock Black Widow, Golden Bee, RC Bee and Dragonfly?
