Try this:
What was the original purpose of the concial steel tower placed atop The Empire State Building in 1931? (HINT: The answer is aircraft related)
(Only "cheaters look it up)

If it was to attract B-25's to fly into the building, it worked. Ken

The building is truly iconic. As many times as I've driven past it, I never went inside. Ken

The view from the top is something Ken, but
the lobby is spectacular.
My wife works a few blocks away on Madison avenue.

Actually is was intended as a mooring mast for Zepplins. (And NOT the Led (sic)variety)
Question 2: What 1937 aviation event ended all consideration of using the conical tower as mooring mast?
Bob: I respectfully disqualify you for looking it up.

Let's see 1937...That had to be the Hindenburg disaster.......If you had said 1933, I'd have to guess that King Kong was somehow involved..........

Re: Trivia time!
it was the first time they tried it that canceled program, too windy...
Ok, heres another kinda common, but not so common question: What caused the Hindenberg to burn so fast?
What radio station/town broadcasted the event, we alway hear?

A US embargo on Helium. The germans had to use Hydrogen in stead.

Re: Trivia time!
In regards to the burn rate, aside from the hydrogen itself, I would certainly say that the aluminum powder that was applied in addition to the dope set off a chain reaction like a sparkler igniting. Seeing that aluminum powder is added to solid propellants I would certainly say this made a furious fire. Ken

Re: Trivia time!
Burn rate: Like Ken, it was my understanding that the dope coupled with aluminum powder caused the outer covering to be extremely flammable. Essentially the same reason that the WW I planes burned so furiously once ignited.
Re: Trivia time!
Elements of truth in all of the above.
The Gernan Zeppin "Hindenburg", filled with helium, exploded and burned approching the mooring mast in Lakehurst, New Jersey. The accepted source of ignition was spark from static electricity build up iwithin "Hindeburg's" internal structure. The otside weather had been experiencing turbulent skies and lighting.
Yes the landing was being reported on the radio by a tearful and terrified announcer. "Getting this going, get this going! Oh, the humanity!" The station call letters elude me at the moment in my sleep-sodden brain.
BTW, such airship were known dirigibles at the time. The term "BLIMP" only came into use in the WWII era and is of military origin.
BLIMP is both an abbreviation AND an acronym. I'll will leave it up to you to look up the meaning. See the site I previously posted.
While you are there look up RADAR, SONAR, LSD (a ship and not a drug)......................
(The above is not a test but a challenge to your curiosity) No curiosity? You are outta luck in a very curious world.)

Re: Trivia time!
yep, it was the dope! So they later sold it some guy out in the middle of iowa...just kidding.
WLS-Chicago, back before the FCC capped the wattage to 50,000 they could be heard almost coast to coast. In fact the wattage was so great there were scattered reports of people with a lots of dental work acting like radios.

Re: Trivia time!
fit,
In naval terminolgy an LSD is a Landing Ship Dock from which LVT's (Landing Vehiclte Track) were lauched for coastal assaults.
I remember training them in the USAR in the early to mid-60's.
