Sig Akromaster build.
Fed ex man dropped the kit off yesterday and I started gluing the preliminary bits today. I am going to go with the extended wing.
Initially power will be my sportsman .15 but I may want to switch to a fox .15 down the road.
Question for everyone out there:
Does any one have a sportsman and a fox .15 they can put side by side and compare the mounting pattern? This would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Jim

I don't have a Sportsman anymore but I do have the instruction sheet with dimensions. I also have a Fox .15x of you want me to take pics or send data let me know.

Re: Sig Akromaster build.
The only pics would be of the leading and trailing edge halves glued together. This build will be slow going as I will be working on it with my son when we have time.
If you could measure the mounting holes on the fox and see if they match up with the specs you have on the sportsman that would be great. If you could measure the distance from the front mounting holes to the front of the driveplate on the fox it would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

Finally dug this thing out and intend to finish it! Wing is almost done. I will be replacing the 1/2a bellcrank the kits came with with an aluminum 3" item.

Jim,
I never saw where you asked me for that info. Do you still need the dimensions?

Re: Sig Akromaster build.
I probably should have worded that better...
Yeah you did het a new .15, I see it now. Those .15BB engines are real screamers and very smooth. They do not 4-2 though.
I want one, but I am getting no love from Fox manufactuing.

Re: Sig Akromaster build.
Made good progress today. Decided to go with the stock bellcrank and sheeted the wing.
When I epoxied the doublers over a year ago they slid, leaving a big gap at the leading edge.
My solution is to add 3/16 balsa "triplers" on each side. They also hide the seam where the addition meets the stock fuse at the doublers.
I decided the lines of the fuse lent them self to a turbo prop duster more than a Pawnee. My son likes this scheme, minus the razorback logo and with transparent red wing covering:

That transformation turned out well Jim. You didn't get any problems when removing those wing tips?

Wingtips came off fine, going to replace them with 3/8 balsa "cap ribs". I am also toying with the idea of adjustable leadouts and a tip weight box.OVERLORD wrote:That transformation turned out well Jim. You didn't get any problems when removing those wing tips?

Re: Sig Akromaster build.
After I put the cheek blocks on I realized I didn't leave a way to install the landing gear. Came up with an easy fix:
I think I'm to the point of filling the fuselage, I will try Rustys' spackle technique followed by silkspan/polycrylic.
I don't know if I am going with sewn hinges or I may try actual hinges.

Re: Sig Akromaster build.
Looks nice, I've never seen an Acromaster in real life. My LG on the Yak is similar and pondering ideas of how to secure it. I was also thinking of springing it with a rubber band somehow, since as a sport flyer it'll be more likely than my stunter to smack the gear at the bottom of some sort of spontaneous exotic maneuver. Maybe I'll invent a new dangerous trick... a Rustio.

Re: Sig Akromaster build.
I have a sig twister on order at the hobby shop, I also have a fazer landing gear on order:
I plan on installing hard wood mounting blocks between the doublers. If I bugger the gear I can easily replace it. But that's another whole build thread.

Hey Jim, Any reason why these wouldn't work for you? The steel type I have used on several models.
EDIT- I use 2-56 machine screws/nuts I get from Radio Shack.. instead of the wood screws that come with them. This tightens the straps down nice and locks the gear into place.

Re: Sig Akromaster build.
Roddie, if I could have found those metal ones locally yesterday I would have gone with them.

Re: Sig Akromaster build.
Jim,
It's been my experience that the straps do work however they are not very forgiving and get stressed during anything, but perfect landings.
What you came up with is a good compromise as it will allow for a bit of absorption and will not fully collapse like the Goldberg series of models.
Another option would be 2 piece wire gear that attaches through the fuse with a collar. It looks just like a solid wire except it allows for removal with destroying the wing/fuse.
I have pictures if interested.

Re: Sig Akromaster build.
Here ya go Jim,
I wasn't in the mood to take things apart, but I drew a picture and took a picture. If you can't see what's going on I will take it apart.
This is what it looks like in place. I used square tube as it's stronger than the round stuff. I would insert a hard wood plug in the fuse and drill the hole through it. I didn't and wish I did.

Re: Sig Akromaster build.
Well, I'm going to have to keep track of this thread now. I spent all my Christmas money on C/L stuff, and one of the things I ordered was an Akromaster. I bought one back in '82, but never built it. I scavenged the wood out of it 20-25 years ago. So, on a wild hair, I ordered another one to actually build this time, as the Akromaster was "technically" the first balsa C/L plane I ever bought. Was thinking of putting a Medallion .15 on it. Would the Medallion .15 be enough for this plane? UPS says it should be here on Monday.

Re: Sig Akromaster build.
I don't know about the Cox 15, but the fox 15 and OS 15fp's and LA's are great. Some guys run OS 10LA's in them. It was our first real plane. My oldest son and I both built one. Great little planes. I have a kit in the closet and my daughter is building one, STILL. I want to make my next one electric.

Hello Mark,
I was at the Jan 1st Fun Fly in & talked with Duke about the Akromaster soooo I found one at Ted's H.S. in Portland. I haven't started building yet so maybe we can compare notes. I plan on using my Enya 15.

Re: Sig Akromaster build.
I can't imagine a Tee Dee .15 being any less powerful than any of those others. But unless it's a .15 Special, that's the one that had piston seizing problems if I recall correctly.

Re: Sig Akromaster build.
The Cox .15 would probably do just fine. Problem would be it weighs less than the others.
