Fun Fact:
Blue Flame was the name of the Chevy 6 cylinder engine back in 1936-1957.

The Blue Flame, named for its engine color, was introduced in 1936 to replace the old Stovebolt 6 cylinder models. The venerable 216-cubic-inch engine generated 85 horsepower. It got a boost to 90 horsepower and an enlarged displacement to 235 in 1941. The 1954 and 1955 Corvettes were equipped with the 150-horsepower versions.

The Blue Bullet first appeared in Invaders #11-12 (December 1976-January 1977), and was created by Roy Thomas and Frank Robbins. The character subsequently appears in The Invaders #4 (August 1993), in which he dies.

But the famed "Blue Flame" Chevy was still a "babbit banger" until 1954 they went to insert bearings on the mains and rods AND an oil pump rather than "splash" lubrication system.

Babbit bearings were soft and would histrically "knock" over time. To stop the "knocking" repair required removal and resurfacing of the crankshaft and recasting the babbit metal bearing surfaces.

Insert bearings where harder, lasted longer and were easier to replace. Once GM went to insert bearings their sales began to climb against their competitors. Ford used insert almost from the beginning in 1903.

I believe Ford used the babbitt bearings up into the mid-30s.

Neat article on babbitt bearings:

When rebuilding an engine meant pouring molten metal

Not so Travis.

I'll reference the date Ford changed to inserts from babbit. Gimme a few. The famous Ford flathead V-8's were not known for knocking bearings.

BTW, some early automakers use LEATHER for crankcase bearings.

http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_specs-85early.htm
Ford Flathead

The first section here will cover the common 221 cubic inch 85hp engines which had 21 studs per head. The displacement remained the same from the 1932 to 1937 versions. Ford started with cast iron heads but changed to aluminum heads for 1933. The aluminum heads were a problem in service and were frequently replaced with cast iron heads. Corrosion made the aluminum erode and become difficult to remove. The engines started out with poured main bearings as earlier Ford engines had used, but the change was made to insert type main bearings late in 1936 production. Production of V8's in 1932 was limited due to initial casting problems with the blocks, causing a high rejection rate. Many 1932 Ford cars were actually equipped with the four cylinder engine for this reason and the concern of the buying public about the reliability of the new V8 engine. The four cylinder engine was dropped in 1933 as production problems and reliability issues with the V8 engines subsided.

Travis:

"On a side note, Chevy was the first to come out with a V-8" - Travis

Not quite true, Travis

Ford produced it's first V-8's in 1932; Oldsmobile rather than Chevrolet produced the first GM overhead valve V-8's in 1948; Chevrolet followed in 1955 with the 265 CID OHV V-8.

Ford first produced an OHV V-8 in 1954.

(OK, so I'm a tour guide (docent) the the LeMay Car Museum in Tacoma, WA. According to The Guiness Book of world Records, the LeMay is the largest privately-held automotive collection in the world with over 2K cars and I am familiar with all of them.) Very Happy

http://jalopnik.com/5086646/engine-of-the-day-the-very-first-chevrolet-v8
Engine Of The Day: The Very First Chevrolet V8
We haven't had an Engine Of The Day for a while, but the Chevrolet Series D V8 engine deserves some attention. 288 cubic inches, overhead valves, crossflow heads… and it was manufactured 38 years before the small-block Chevrolet engine. That's right, Chevrolet had an OHV V8, generating an excellent-for-its-time 55 horsepower, back in 1917! Chevrolet was absorbed by General Motors that year, and the Series D was dropped when The General's marketers decided to make Chevrolet its low-priced marque… but imagine what might have been, had early hot-rodders become accustomed to cheap V8s in the decades before the Ford Flathead V8.

OK, I concede the point of who was "first". However it depends you interpret the data. I was thinking in terms of mass production and marketing.

Your info is solid and informative. Thanks for presenting it.

It's fine, I do have a sense of humour.

Interestingly enough, on our Facebook site the votes are 100% Blue Bullet between that choice and Blue Flame. After the weekend we will combine both results.
