Post  luke.w.pc Tue Aug 21, 2012 5:58 pm

i need to make a wrench for my surestart engine, can anyone give my plans of the shape / size to cut out of sheet steel, could i just cut it with hacksaw / dremel then use file?
Does it need to be a particular thickness metal?
Also for a new surestart is it advisable to piston reset immediately or after how long and how often, how will i know when it needs reseting?
Any help appreciated
Thanks luke

Wrenches are easily available and relatively inexpensive. Available here:

http://coxengines.ca/cox-.049-wrench.html

Or here:

http://www.exmodelengines.com/product.php?productid=17631&cat=258&page=1

2 are best. Where are you located?

How did you come about a reset tool yet no wrench? Bet that's a story.

Like Jason suggested your time is much more valuable than the cost of a couple wrenches. Unless you just enjoy making tools.

To answer your question, a reset is only performed when needed. Doesn't matter if it's brand new or used.

Thanks and i know they're cheap but i live in the uk.No one seems to sell them here and postage is expensive.
Are they necessary to take a cox engine to bits or just useful?
Would it be that difficult to make, it looks quite simple?

Ahhh the UK. A few of our members live there. Hopefully they will chime in and help out soon.

To answer your question, yes and no. You can take apart the engine with common hand tools however, what your left with is a bunch of unuseable scrap parts. For head and cylinder removal only use the correct wrench period. You can take the backplate off with a screwdriver.

What condition is your engine in? Does it need to come apart to make operational? Can you get away with removing the backplate and cleaning that up? Or is rhe cylinder/piston froze.

the engine is good new condition but apparently clean small metal shavings out the crankcase, i dont want to run it if its got metal shavings in!
'https://sites.google.com/site/coxenginecollection/sure-start' says surestarts can have play in the piston when new, do i need a piston reset tool to reset the piston, is a piston reset important?

I've not found one with shavings in them Luke.
I think your time would be better served obtaining
Some decent fuel if you're going to make a habit of running these things.
PM me your address and I'll bung some with a couple wrenches
In the post.
Very Happy

If you are concerned about metal shavings, just remove the backplate screws and look inside. Rinse it out with fresh fuel and reassemble the backplate and don't over tighten the screws as they are delicate and easily damaged.

I agree, that should clean it out. Or alcohol to wash it out and then re-oil it. I have heard of stray metal in the Estes-built Surestarts. I wouldn't worry about the pisron reset. The surestart isn't going to be running extreme RPMs and the risk of mushrooming the piston is very real on your first reset attempt. I've ruined a couple.
