I'm working on a Localizer this week and next. Thought you might like to see my viewpoint. No, I won't tell you where I am.

Nice U-2R, the second one isn't a U-2R though, I'd venture to say a TU-2S.

I'd say Beale AFB (south end of the runway) as it doesn't look like Edwards AFB.

i saw the old "aluminum overcast" B-17 on saturday, it stayed a week longer than planned because of hail damage, they had to replace some of the parts on it like the aileron's. Good to see it flying again, wish i got pics though Sad

Cribbs74: thought i posted here, but.... when i was in Japan in 1967-1969 there were EB57-E "weather" planes on our runway. they had huge fuel tanks and long wings like the U-2 and when they took off they could go vertical before the middle of the runway. we were never allowed to take pictures of any aircraft on the runway, but the local Japanese people lined the runway, off base, with cameras, telephoto lenses, tripod, video camera, etc. maybe that is why the aircraft went vertical before the end of the runway. there was also squadron of C130-?? "weather" planes attached to the base. I worked on the regular planes like the F105-C/D, F4-C/D, T33, EB57-B/C/D and eventually EB66-C/D/E in Thailand. those were the days.

Say Ron, what exactly do you do at the airport? I thought you told me awhile ago but I don't quite remember. I have someone who is trying to get up here to Minnesota from the airport there in OK. He is having trouble getting his flight after having to exchange his tickets for a later flight, I don't know the whole story... I think I told you about him, his name is Greg. He works for the Fire Department at the airport.

Yes I do work out of Will Rogers. I am AD Air Force though and I am a NAVAIDS SME more or less. So while I base in OKC I do all my work away fom there. Sorry to hear about your pal I do remember you speaking of him. If I venture over to the actual airport side I will look him up.

It must have been some good times! Interestingly the C130 hurricane hunters still fly out of Keesler AFB in Mississippi. They are forever interrupting my work when I go there.......

Cribbs74: I went to tech school at Kessler AFB in 1966-67, and those C130's were not hurricane busters in Japan. but more like what we call black ops today. TS
i knew several guys who "worked" in the detachment, but they couldn't talk about it or say where they had been.
i got to see most of Japan, Hawaii, twice, Okinawa, Taiwan, and South Korea shortly after the USS Pueblo was captured by the North Koreans. i slept in the middle of a hot pad of 4 - 6 F-4C/D aircraft with hot nukes ready to go 24/7. we worked 24 hour shifts. lots of fun. especially when my shift mate got VD and couldn't work and wanted to get back to Japan to see his real wife. wonderful group. oh lets see i guess i didn't re-enlist did i. guess i wasn't dumb as i looked at the time. Hey Happy,

Call me Ron! Sorry to hear your tenure wasn't what you thought it would be. The cold war era wasn't much fun I'm sure. The AF overall has been pretty good to me. There have been plenty of times that I was told to do things that I didn't enjoy and have had a load of bad experiences over the last 18yrs that were absolutely no fun.

For me even though I had to go through some hassles the people made the difference and so much so I re-enlisted 5 times.

Actually just a little while ago we got a call saying he did get his flight and will be leaving at 7:00AM. He will end up in Denver, CO and then he will get on a flight that will take him up here.

Ron: i have to agree. after "some" good people in Japan i was ready to re-enlist. but when i went to Thailand things changed fast. met good people. worked for bad people. my experience for 3 years was on newer ECM, so i was assigned to work on the obsolete ww2 type ecm on the eb66-e. instead of 5 to 10 pound equipment, i had to remove 200-300pound equipment by my self, no osha in those days, thru a small hole in the tail of the ecm converted bomber during the dayshift on the runway at over 140 degrees inside the aircraft tail. you get the picture. nco's showed up for roll call, then disappeared into "town" to visit "friends". i couldn't wait to get out. i made friends with local hospital missionaries who had interests in photography and spent a lot of time with them off base or in the airconditioned photo lab. i adjusted and got out asap. i survived. and life goes on. got to see Hawaii twice for free, so i can't complain. 3 week vacations with work mostly at night. what a deal. right next to waikiki beach.

The bottom picture looks like some sort of directional antenna. Log periodic or yagi.
