Well,

Basically you fill the blanks with plugs, not sure if it's called plug blanking or not. Anyway it does take some time, I used 1/8 balsa sheet and cut a piece to roughly the right size by eyeballing it then I sand it down till it fits snug in the blank. Don't push the plugs flush with the stringers you need to have them raised up some so you can sand it to shape.

It's a tip I learned from Kim and it really strengthens the forward area of the fuselage nicely.

Thanks Bob,

.020's abound on Ebay, if you can't find one give me a shout. It really is fun to do these small builds as there is a lot of fabricating to make things work. It's a great way to spend your spare time.

I have yet to fly my Guillows Spitfire as I was too afraid it was more than my skill level would allow. I figured a nice slow tricycle geared high wing would help me work up to it. I will be sure to post a vid or two and give a flight report.

Thanks for that advice! Im with yah, I have my p-51 almost done, but I'm a tad afraid to take it out with my skill level. I might actually take after you and build a High wing first!

I love those kits. I would like to find something like it for control line.

Plug blanking a la Kim Stricker style. Took me most of the day to do this and modify the cowl.

Tip for those who have never done a guillows mod, the cowls are very flimsy and will split easily! If you need to modify it make a pin hole and slowly enlarge to hole with sandpaper wrapped around a dowel or cylindrical tool. Anything else and you will surely be buying a replacement cowl.

Hopefully I will make moveable control surfaces tonight.

looking good Ron, i was just thinking about your comment on the flimzy guillows cowls, could you do all the trimming for the motor and etc... and then line the inside of the cowl with light weight fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin? should make for a pretty darn tough cowl that should last longer.

p.s. the fiberglass gcloth i have is 1 yard and weighs 3/4 of an ounce

Rusty,

Guillows 400 series are what you want. They all come with parts for nitro U control or FF.

Take a look! Click on the picture and see what I mean.

Might work Mitch, pretty small area to work in. It may be worth a shot though. To be honest I am not sure the cowl will stand up to the heat of the engine.

Yeah, the exhaust blows out inside of the cowl. That's nasty, maybe it's why they supply a synthetic firewall. It might need a drain hole at the lowest point for the castor goo to dribble out.

Ok,

Here is where I am at. I have run out of resources here in my hotel room but, all I have left to do is install the servos and cover it.

I need to head to the storage building and grab the iron and gun.

Everything is just tacked in place and will be dissassembled before covering. I added some dihedral because if you build it as the plans show it has little to none.

I used some 3/32 reinforcing strips to the elevator an rudder so I could install cut down Sig easy hinge strips.

That's some sexy looking build omg wow!

I too, am working on a Guillows #309 kit.  Almost done . . .

Did this project get finished up?  I've searched the web on and off for about 3 years looking for anyone who has built this particular model to completion, let alone showing a video of it flying as good as it looks.

Nice!  Classic lines.  Lot's of effort/hours to build.  Unlike an ARF I would be hesitent to fly it.  Beautiful job.  Enjoy it for awhile then calm day, lot's of room, pro at the sticks.

Love your overhead shot.

Background Le Mans/Formula One cars in background.  Is that really a guy with shades and headset..................

LOL - yes! That's the pilot bust that comes with the kit. I figured if I'm going to put it in, I'd make him look like a pilot, and NOT some creepy looking perverted guy in a cheap suit looking for a BJ from his passenger, as depicted on the box art. Headset was made from scrap balsa & leftover music wire from the kit.

I modded the existing build plans from the back sheet and then had a few copies printed at my town's local copy shop.  It's meant to be used by advanced builders since I included only the major changes in the design.

One big note to mention is that the wing was built as one piece, in the same manner as seen in kit #802 from the Skyhawk.

Here's sheet 2 for you all in case you're interested in using it. Copy, scale the size, and print it up!  Smile
