My CA or CyA (super glue) allergy

My CA or CyA (super glue) allergy
Hi friends, I developed an allergy (respiratory) to the garden-variety "instant-glues" several years ago. Now; all I have to do.. is open-up a tube and squirt some out.. and I'm going to have swelling in my sinuses that persists for several days if not a week or more..
As soon as the glue "kicks".. there's a vapor that's released. If you're allergic; once you smell it.... it's too late.
My sinuses are compromised as it is. Seasonal allergies mess with me BAD. Trying to sleep when you're affected is the worst.
So I've been thinking; if I don't (or can't) smell it... then maybe I'll be able to use the glue without consequence. I'm going to try using the expanding-foam ear-plugs in my nostrils.. to see if I can tolerate use with mouth breathing only. I always use a fan.. but it hasn't seemed to help.
This afternoon I dug out my bag of earplugs... and put some in my CA glue storage.. along with a reminder to try them.
I'll report back "here" when I have some results.
Feel free to comment

Re: My CA or CyA (super glue) allergy
Are there alternatives you could use?
Epoxy, Polyacrylate glue, etc.?
I wonder if something like this would help: https://www.amazon.com/Solder-Fume-Extractor-Filtration-Soldering/dp/B08HYZQ81J/ref=asc_df_B08HYZQ81J/
Or you could setup a fan that vents outside, like maybe repurpose a cheap ceiling bath fan.

Hi Jacob, Thanks for your reply. Yes; eventually I'll need to provide exhaust to outdoors. I have the fans to do it.. but access to outside air will be tough. The sm. basement windows afford considerable accessibility challenges.. or CAC I've got CAC issues..
Re: My CA or CyA (super glue) allergy
I'm paying DEARLY for this. Yesterday I used a LOT of superglue while making some homemade wheels. I used the foam-plugs in both nostrils.. but still ended up with an allergic reaction a few hours later. It's now 18 hours later.. and my sinuses are still totally blocked due to swelling... yet my nose is running like a faucet. I've been taking antihistamines.. but not getting much relief. As I type this; there's a mountainous pile of snot-soaked tissues next to my laptop.. The struggle is real.
I searched the web for info. and found this on another forum. I'm not the only person who's had this happen..
from the Dakka Dakka forum
ALWAYS ensure that you HAVE ADEQUATE VENTILATION when using chemicals.. and UNDERSTAND the hazards associated with them.
Re: My CA or CyA (super glue) allergy
I work with and have worked with some odious adhesives, developers, disinfectants, and dyes in my basement workshop and had to cut a 6 inch hole in the exterior wall for my 110 CFM exhaust systems. You could penetrate the exterior wall through the framing just above the foundation wall and under the subfloor for your vent terminal. A DIY exhaust hood and enclosure is easy enough to build and wearing disposable glove can limit your exposure.roddie wrote:Admin wrote:Are there alternatives you could use?

Thanks for the ideas. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. CyA is the only thing (so far..) that I have a problem with. I may try an "odorless" variety. I don't think I get a reaction from getting the adhesive on my skin. I'm actually careful about getting it on my skin.
I didn't use a fan this last time.. and I definitely should have.

My sympathies roddie, I have year-long seasonal allergies that OTC medications never help so I just indure. CA doesn't bother me but I stick fingers together every time I use it. Formula 560 is quite benign and would work great on your foam wheels. I have a love hate relationship with CA, for me it works well when working with balsa not so well with other applications.

I think that I'm finally feeling better. I've been on a cocktail of OTC meds including Pseudoephedrine, Loratadine, Dyphenhydramine tablets and Oxymetazoline nasal-spray at varied intervals/times.. but I think it's the nasal-spray that helps the most. It treats the "swelling".. which is the root cause of the irritation. I don't take any of the aforementioned meds regularly... but this CyA allergy is over-the-top miserable until it subsides.
I'm bothered by seasonal allergies too Robert but same as you; the OTC meds don't give me much relief. I'm also allergic to our two cats. I have very narrow sinus-passages.. and once there's any inflammation; I'm sneezing and wheezing.
I'll have to try the Formula 560 that you recommend.
Re: My CA or CyA (super glue) allergy
For years I used this roddie. I have BPH and have had it for the last 40 years, not fun stuff. This is the only BPH friendly Med out there, all others would tie me up like a Monkey on a string. Most men over 60 have some problems with it.
I gave it up a couple of years ago, but it may help you.
I think you would find applications for formula 560, it holds well and dries clear.
