Re: 3 Seater Go Cart
Ok, I FINALLY got that evil little engine to run. It's loud, smokes too much, and has a very fragile throttle system.
No real problems now though. Tested the backseat with two kids and it works great, they love it.

I am not sure. I would guess Iron?
It is a "Fun Power" 5HP.

Probably alum bore,,if so,,they smoke till they die. If you re-ring the piston and ball hone the cylinder,,they smoke worse. Better to just put a new ring on and leave the cylinder alone

Good to know. I mounted a deflector on the exhaust pipe.
I have tried to rebuild quite a few mower engines with no luck.

I'm afraid that's out of the question. It's just too much.
We have a 5.5 Honda OHV on the other cart, it runs great. On the third one, there is a Subaru Robin which also runs great.
We picked up one of these for $99 on sale -

The Subaru/Robins are a great little motor. Used by alot of golf cart companys due to there reliabilty. the golf cart we use to tow the race car has one, and we have piumped it out a bit with tuning

Re: 3 Seater Go Cart
The only thing "wrong" with it, is it runs rough for a moment after releasing the throttle. Also, if you pull the cord more than twice without the ignition on, then turn it on, and pull it again, it backfires and shoots a fireball out the back.

Sounds like a timing issue. Or valve adjustment. Or maybe just a float adjustment.
When you are pulling it through you are filling the cylinder with fuel and when you turn on the ignition and give it a crank it's igniting the excess fuel and Bang!
Just rebuild the carb, set the float height and do a tune up on it to cover valve adjustment and timing. Your prob should clear up.....

Releasing the throttle back to neutral after higher idle?
After doing some quick searching Here is a rebuild kit for the carb.

That little fuel pumper diaphram piece with the opposing horseshoe cuts on it is paramount to getting them to run right. I had a stubborn lawn mower engine and that piece had failed and it backfired and hard started and all the rest until that was replaced. I think yours is a fixed main jet carb inside and that jet hole needs to be cleaned out with a piece of wire. Read where there is a sponge pickup filter inside the tank and those can rot, fail and load the carb with junk as well as plug the jet.
Valves need to be set right, there should be a cold motor adjustment value somewhere. It's a oil burner, so a nice hot Bosch plug wouldn't hurt. or equivalent NGK plug.

Re: 3 Seater Go Cart
The Robin does it, not the Briggs. The Briggs idles great once it warms up.
I paid $23 for that rebuild kit!

Re: 3 Seater Go Cart
Second time out for testing. The retainer bolt fell out of the clutch, and a nut fell off one of the roll bar mounts. The rest were loose.
They all got lock washers.

Re: 3 Seater Go Cart
Son and one of my grandson's have a "Yerf Dog" of similat design to the one shown except it seats only two.
It has an an 8 horse Honda four-cycle horizontal shaft for power , full roll cage, seat belts and four-wheel independent suspension.
ANYONE, including G'pa, riding in it MUST wear a motorcyle helment and ride ONLY in authorized areas like on private property. It is not "street legal".

We have a coulpe motorcycle helmets, but I personally think it is more dangerous riding with one on - I can barley see out of it.
Does your son's Cart have a belt-drive torque converter Dave?

Re: 3 Seater Go Cart
I'm big on helmets too. Although I usually don't have one when I ride the mini bike, but my son has to have one on and pants.
On the Vstar: helmets, jackets, pants, boots and gloves are required

Matt:
If you can't see out of your helmet it either doesn't fit properly or is of poor design. Recommend ALWAYS riding with a helmet on your head. (I've seen to many people seriously injured or killed when riding without a helmet) I hold seat belts in the same regard for the same reason. (How do you imagine I've lived as long as I have?)
We use "open-face" design helmets exclusively for this type of riding. The speeds involved do not require further protection of the "full-face" design which does restrict vision.
Yes, the "Yerf Dog" has belt-driven torque converter.
