Speaking of Cox .15's
Was attempting to start my Ebay Sportsman .15, when it fired on it's prime, then suddenly stopped abruptly...mechanically locked! Yikes!
I'd not disassembled the engine, just oiled it and stuck it on the stand. Removing the rear end, I found the reed retainer up in the case, with the rod and pin putting new bends in it!
The reed was loose in there, with just one tab slightly nibbled on, and I was able to re-bend the retainer spring and put everything back.
It seems to fit like it should, but I was wondering if anyone had experienced this before, and if anyone has a spare spring they'd part with.
Gonna try to run it again this evening if time allows.

Double gulp!. Was thinking of running Ron C's motor this weekend (same motor). I might pull the back off and take a peek, just to be sure and to satisfy my insatiable curiosity.

The circlip was probably not fully seated by the previous rebuilder. If it feels tight I think it's safe to run. Is it a beryllium copper star shaped reed? It can be replaced with a Mylar if necessary. Of course make sure the circlip is facing the direction that allows the most freedom for reed movement. One way is backwards and will restrict the reed.

Hey man, I'm seriously insulted. Are you questioning my abilites?
Never hurts to take a second look, hey I know it's hard to believe but, yes even I can make mistakes.

Re: Speaking of Cox .15's
Tis true, I'm afraid.
Just asked Mark, he just sent me a #2 cylinder to replace the one I ruined when I turned a burr into it. Sometimes those wrenches slip!
I tried to remove the burr but, in doing so I removed the very thought of compression/
A lot of you guys have been messing with these things longer than I have been alive! So to be honest I have much to learn.

Yeah...the reed is the four-tab copper type. I aligned the chewed tab with the sharp bend in the circle clip...it doesn't rotate, so maybe it'll be OK there. The clip is in there tight, although you CAN see a slight misalignment from where it doesn't perfectly fit it's groove.
Do you have a source for mylar that will work as a reed? I remember some talk a while back about using floppy disc material, but don't recall any definitive info. Maybe I can get some blank stock from Bernie or Matt.
I'm probably gonna try to run it again tomorrow, and do a re-test of my Slide-Rule Tachometer while I'm at it. I had a guy point out that I was using it wrong (impressive that it STILL gave an accurate reading!) in putting the end of it against the engine, instead of laying it alongside the cylinder. For once, I READ the directions, but didn't LOOK at the pictures...woof !

Re: Speaking of Cox .15's
Here are Matt's Queen bee reeds. I don't suppose they would fit, would they? Too small probably.

I have heard lots of people say floppy disk material works well. Surely you can come up with one of those. Its shape is not all that critical as long as the width is right.

Thanks Rusty! Yep...got a whole pack of those old discs...so ANOTHER "To Do" Item! Think I've got some spare reeds for the Queen...didn't check them, just figuring they were a different size.
Guess there's no definitive line between "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and "You don't know what's going on inside-better take a peek" as far as some of these engines are concerned. I figured just to run this sucker and not dis-assemble it, and am REALLY glad that it didn't have chance to really ramp-up before trying to eat the clip !

Re: Speaking of Cox .15's
Got the Sportsman out on the stand, and it ran fine, with me holding my breath for a moment or two. Had it cranking mid-13's on 15% Sig and one of Bernie's 8-4's. May assign it duty on the Bird of Time here in a bit.
AND...got to recheck that steel and aluminum "Voo Doo" stick called a Vibra-Tak! Spooky stuff !

Re: Speaking of Cox .15's
Kim, I hate to be the one that has to tell you this but that Vibra-tak is as out of date as last years Easter bonnet. I upgraded to one of these new battery powered jobs and have never looked back (or you might argue forward for that matter ).
Note that the calibration isn't too bad, 3600 RPM from my desk lamp.
