Treasures from the trash Empty Treasures from the trash

Over the course of time I have scrounged some very useful modeling tools from items being tossed out. To wit:

- A 1 1/2" mechanic's style "clamp-on" vice suitable for use at both home and in the field.

- An aluminum ice-cube tray of 34 assorted jeweler's files; flat, triangular, "rat tail" and square.

- Numerous broken life-time guaranteed Sears Craftsman tools: wrenches, screwdrivers etc. redeemable for new at Sears.

- Hand tools like small ball-peen hammers, pry bars, saws, squares, tape measures, tin snips, drill bits etc.

and more. What a guy going to do in retirement anyway? Cool

Keith:

Too bad I'm "digitally disavantaged" because this vice is a mechnic's vice in exact minture and would show very well in a picture. It's cast iron and very sturdy.

Someday a digital camera, yes. I owe several forum members pictures of my unusual "stuff".

I dumpster dive every day. Have a look at my ebay store Cash registers Easy bake cake decorator, old computers jewelry displays I grap al that stuff I LOVE digging through the trash! Today I found an hp computer probally gonna sell it for individual parts. I do test and make sure every thing works though. I have fix it skill so i get it and usually disassemble and sell but sometimes fix and sell as a whole. Parts ALWAYS well 80% of the time bring more money than complete working.

Though not model related my latest "score" was a dead 10" electric chain that was "fried" because it had been run on a 100 foot 16 gauge extension cord. The excess resistence in the wire had "cooked" the internals. I repaired the brush holders, installed new chain and used a 12 gauge wire and now have fine little electric trimming saw.

BTW, never underestimate the cutting ability of an electric chain saw with a sharp blade!

I will meeky admit, from a timber falling family's point of view that the electric saws do work rather well. I have one that was GIVEN to me as a FREEBIE. It would be a rough day on the saw if you had to backpack a generator to fall timber all day Very Happy . If the Tree huggers have there way, it might just end up that way.

Found this one at Home depot, to much money and no swivel base.

Found This one as well, but really bad reviews and trash talking about it. It opens far enough, and multiple swivels, but it is crap it would seem.

Getting closer here, but not enought spread on the jaws, need about 5" spread.

I hit all of the pawn shops yesterday, but nothing. Might have to break down and make my own from bits and pieces.

A vice is an invaluable tool. My Dad gave me his old vice that I used my entire life. It was on his workbench and is now on mine. It is a "Record" vice made in England and it's 50yrs old if it's a day. Still works smooth as silk and is used almost daily. I will probably give it to my son.

As well as a good flat Anvil. I have a 100yr old 50lb blacksmith anvil that has different shapes and curves to it on the end for metal molding. Try whacking the anvil piece hard on a import vise, youll have china dust and chunks at your feet in a moment. Ask me how I know,, Embarassed

The jack screw threads will explode if you put a breaker bar on it to tighten down and get excited,,again,,lesson learned. KAAPOOWWW!!!,, freshly black powder coated 56 chevy upper A-arm flying across the shop,,GRRRR!

The vice that I found in the trash was missing the jackscrew handle. I found the correct diameter spike, cut off the point, threaded the blunt end 4-40, slipped the end into the jackscrew then secured the hande with a (edit) 1/4"X20 acorn nut.

I suppose a "cheater bar" might be used but I haven't found one necessary. Should I want more leverage I'd simply use a larger vice. (I have several in the garage) Cool

BTW, this vice has an anvil end for shaping metal.
