Cox Engine of The Month
Cox Mustang repair

Cox Mustang repair
Last month I attended the Columbia IL swap meet, and picked up a Cox Mustang. I didn't get photos, but with apologies to Kim, here is a picture he took of the same Mustang at the meet.
It seemed to be complete, but I didn't look closely at condition. Perhaps I should have.
Like many of these, it likely didn't survive the first flight. That's good news for the engine, at least. It was clean, undamaged, and turned freely.
The mounting post for the lower cowl was shattered into 3 pieces. Amazingly, all 3 pieces were in the box. I put them back together with Testor's red tube. Then a brass tube collar JB'ed over that to restore some compressive strength for the screw.
The fuel tank was completely sheared off and missing.
I had a ¼ oz. Perfect tank that fit into the fuse. After soldering in some longer tubes, I siliconed it into place.
The elevator had previously been broken in half and re-glued. I left this repair alone, and hope it holds.
A bigger issue was the missing control horn.
I used Testor's red tube again to glue in a replacement horn made from a piece of scrap styrene.
The War Weary survivor. Battered but still standing!
Along with other Cox plastics, this one will fly again at SIRS Vintage Model Aviation Days, June 22-23.
I am not a collector, and have no use for the box. But can't quite bring myself to toss it, either. It's in reasonably good shape, corners intact, and has the 'stage'. If any CEF member can use it, PM me, and I will ship it for the postage cost.

duaneh wrote:[b]Roddie, this is the tank I used. 1/4 oz. Perfect no. 1. It should be about right.
1/4 oz. is 7cc, so more than a BB, less than a BW.
39 cents. Got to love that.
Oh yea.. Maybe you can organize a "balloon-burst" (dive-bombing) competition for the SIRS fly-in... ??
Dollar-store balloon stick-holders = cheap fun!!!
Re: Cox Mustang repair
Nice repair and restore on the P-51 duane….A friend of mine got this same model for a gift when we were about 10 yrs old ….. His dad had some CL experience and could really fly it which he did many times ….It got broken a few times but he just kept gluing it back together… It was the first Cox plane I saw successfully fly, Made quite an impression on me…. Hope we get to see pix or videos of yours in the air

First Run
The SIRS Vintage Model Aviation Days is this weekend. I'm still planning to fly the Mustang, although Saturday's forecast is for 96 deg. Today I put 2 tanks through the postie just to make sure it and the fuel system are OK. I needn't have worried. It started on the first flip, and ran strong & steady.

Yes...what Eric said: Check Back!
(AND, stay hydrated!)
I couldn't make the run up to SIRS this time...hopefully regroup and get there later this year.
Carry On Dude!
