Hello again, I am back
Hello everyone,
It has been a long while. But, it is always good to come back.
Is anyine else brewing their own diesel fuel? If so, what is your recipe. I am new to this and just using a recipe I found in the internet: 102 part formula 40 parts keresene, 35 parts ether, 25 parts castor and 2 parts cetane booster.

Re: Hello again, I am back
I think I should switch to 35 parts kerosene and 40 parts ether and possibly omit the cetane booster

Welcome back. And diesel, not fully explored territory here. Looking forward to your discussion.

The first recipe is fine. Engines smaller than .049 might benefit from more ether. The cetane booster is helpful. Diesel Kleen isn't ideal as it's diluted and I think it has other additives. Amsoil ACB is neat cetane booster.

Re: Hello again, I am back
welcome back
I brew my own diesel
the current mix I use is
55% petrolium
10% castor oil
8% 2 stroke oil
27% ether
from what I have found
ether should be between 20 and 30%
oil should be between 15 and 20%
and you top it off with petrolium (or pump diesel-lamp oil or any petrolium product)
I know people who went as low as 8% oil
but I dont trust that
as for the ether
the more you use the easier it starts but the hotter it runs
if you have a bigger rc diesel you can even drop the ether if the engine is warm
the best starter mix is 1-1-1
all parts 33.333%
but I know from experience it makes a MESS

Re: Hello again, I am back
I wonder if using diesel directly from the pump would be more economical than just kerosene mix the two Have a percentage of each. ??what quantity would be ideal I also have some diesel engine but I don't have much experience in this area I did some testing although it is successful I believe that there is still room for improvement in my recipe I don't like the smell but I would like to use diesel sometimes when there is a lack of nitro fuel having the possibility of using diesel I would say that I would be happy to be able to convert an engine and still fly

for me myself it doesnt matter all petroliums are the same price
but I do know the premium diesel from the pump works the best
there are improvers in it
ps I do love the diesel smell XD

Re: Hello again, I am back
Premium diesel? Do you have more than one grade of diesel there?
Cetane number for pump diesel and kerosene naturally varies. Kerosene cetane number is typically higher than diesel. But pump diesel is required to meet certain specs so cetane boosters are sometimes added.
Pump diesel can work as can many other hydrocarbon fuels. Kerosene seems best for small engines.

jep
the shell has diesel and premium diesel here
the premium has stuff that makes it burn cleaner
before I tried petrolium I used liquid parafin (lamp oil) and I must say there is no diferense

Lamp oil can be similar to kerosene or quite a bit heavier, you have to check the spec sheet.

Re: Hello again, I am back
I haven't flown with diesel for probably 45 years. Back then I only used a local model diesel fuel from Aeroflyte. There was nothing to indicate their formula. In my "fiddling" overt he past few years I have just used the 1:1:1 ratio and have used Jet A-1. I know it makes a mess, but I wouldn't personally recommend using any lower than 25% castor in a diesel due to the extra forces on the crank & crank-pin.
We do have "Truck diesel" as well as "Premium diesel". The premium is designed more for smaller common rail diesels, while the "Truck diesel" is designed for, well, trucks. I never would have considered it in model fuel. It's always just been kerosene. I did have to do some calculations when I used ignition improver. The Redline stuff is wickedly expensive, so I used another brand (Chemtech) that was diluted, so I had to factor in the "naphtha" as part of the kerosene component. Seemed to work ok.

I have several engines I will be playing with. I will probably start with some small PAW's and dieselized Coxes. I have a partially built plane that I think would be great with a PAW .055.

Thank you. The Amsoil is on the way.

Irma was a little rough for me. It went right over our house. It took a few shingles off the roof and knocked down over a dozen trees on my property. I think Ian was a much worse storm because of the storm surge. Fortunately for me, I live far enough south of the storm track that it was just a nasty wind event for us. I hope you were able to escape all damage from the storms we have experienced the last several years.

Re: Hello again, I am back
The home brew works. I did switch the cetane boost to sta bil. The engine is a cox .049 medallion with an RJL conversion head swinging an MAS 7x4 prop.

I think the sloth gets us all from time to time.

Re: Hello again, I am back
I went to start the medallion and broke the crank, hand propping, with no fuel. I obviously miss something. Oh well. So, I decided to dig out an old PAW .06 and give it a go. It required a good, thorough cleaning. But, it rewarded me with some really good runs. It is spinning an MAS 7x4 scimitar on my home made fuel.
Sorry about the poor quality of the video.
