Forest Fire.......

Forest Fire.......
Hi all. So this just happened last Friday. While on the way out to the cottage, I thought I saw a small plume of smoke. The closer I got, I confirmed it. I thought it was out in the lake. So I tried calling my parents to tell them to get the pontoon ready for my arrival so we could go watch and or see how it was. Unfortunately I was not in any reception. So I continued on. The it got a bit smokier, and started to look a lot closer. To my surprise and horror, it was just off of the highway on less than 5 km from my cottage and with the very strong winds was pushing it my way. Then I noticed a spotter plane flying circuits overhead. Got to the cottage and loaded the 'toon and headed out to the campground just in front of the fire. Got a few photos of the water bomber, and a couple of the helicopter after the planes left. Bomber flew right overhead just clearing the treetops. And the helicopter seen us staying a distance away taking pictures so after a couple buckets full, he started filling up aboout 100 feet or less away from us waving to us too. Just thinking he saw we were keeping our distance and being safe for everyone that he had control and was just giving us a 'show'.I Unfortunately my phone and photography skills are not like others on here. We watched for about 2 hours. Saturday and Sunday the helicopter and ground crews were still working on it. And I believe Monday it started up a bit again due to the winds. We had very little rain and someone decided it was a good idea to burn brush in the bush beside their cabin I was told...... The smoke was unbelievable and it still smelled like smoke in the air yesterday I was told.

Re: Forest Fire.......
Glad the first responders were taking care of you and your neighborhood, @NEW222.
Here in New Mexico, sometimes we have problems with arsonists or careless campers, but we also have a problem with electrical storms, lightning bolts starting fires, too. We go through periods of extreme dryness to the extent that the whole region from Arizona through New Mexico to Texas Pan Handle, southern Utah and Colorado is under red no burn (fire prohibited) conditions.
We had a problem with fires in New Mexico may be 25 then 10 years ago. Some had pine forests all the way up to their cabin, with no clear fire break space in case of fire.
We had high winds then, gusting to 70 MPH (115 kmh). A good number lost their homes, because of the lack of fire break between their houses and the forest trees.
It made for nice cool living yes, but did little to help them spare their places. You were fortunate to have water sources nearby from which they could draw from.

Re: Forest Fire.......
Hi New222,
I googled Manitoba Fire map:
https://www.gov.mb.ca/conservation_fire/Fire-Maps/fireview/fireview.html
Quite a few 'Under Control' fires.
Hope everyone stays safe.
I don't understand why the CL415 is not being built anymore. Awesome plane.
Nice photos, story, thanks.
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

Re: Forest Fire.......
Here in Illinois, (just outside of Chicago) We are having a respiratory advisory because of all the fires up in Canada and where the smoke is being carried by the jest steam down over Minnesota, Wisconsin and upper Illinois.
Have had the advisory now for almost two weeks as the winds have been rather calm ( 3~10mph winds).
It has been good for flying my small planes but when my Cardinal (Cox engine of the Month) got rather high, it was hard to see with all the smoky haze in the air.
Lost it in the air twice but had a helper watching/timing with me and kept an eye on it with me.

Re: Forest Fire.......
Those are great photos Chancey. Glad that you're safe. The recent BIG forest-fires in Canada have carried smoke high in the skies over New England... making for some breathtaking sunsets.
