Cox Engine of The Month
Patrick's Racer
Patrick's Racer
So, got this friend named Patrick, the only other Circle Turner in my immediate area. It's not unusual for me not to hear from him, or have my calls not returned for several months...only to receive an urgent phone call--"Kim!!! We GOT to fly this weekend!"
I'll make some changes to my plans and meet up with him, and his cardboard box full of loose equipment, with his battered Sig Skyray riding proudly on top of the heap. I've known him for a couple of decades now, and have long given up on berating him for not at least separating the junk with dividers, and maybe putting a drop or two of oil in the Black Widow. We do usually get the Sky Ray's B.W. unstuck, and running...very nicely actually...and Patrick gets to put in a few flights.
He's somewhat obsessed with speed, and the idea of flying on incredibly long lines...the latter of which is not a bad idea since he gets dizzy flying out the Sky Ray's fuel on 35' lines.
On our recent run to a St. Louis Swap Meet, he sprung his latest "flash" (he has a lot of them)..."Kim, I want you to help me build the smallest plane we can for a .15, so I can fly it on 70' lines! Can we do that?" As I was pondering the request and forming an answer, he asked me how long I'd owned my car...I think Patrick's got a bit of Attention Deficit Disorder. "STAY ON TOPIC!!!", I yelled loud enough for passing truck drivers to hear through the Miata's fabric roof.
Patrick's disorder responds well to volume and anger, so we were able formulate a plan with only a couple other irritating divergences. I agreed to research my giant stack of moldy magazines for a design that might work, with him accepting my warning that the thing might fall like a rock when the engine quit.
It looks like Patrick and I are gonna attempt to build a couple of Quasi-Rat Racers, reduced enough to accommodate his .15's and quench his latest obsession. If he stays with me on this, I'll have future reports, but if this latest flash collapses like a dying star, this will be another single, odd post from me.
Anyway, this is the design I'm gonna pitch to him...taken from a March 1966 M.A.N. I figure to replace much of the hardwood with balsa, and fly it on Spider Wire.

Re: Patrick's Racer
Looks pretty speedy. I imagine a mild 15 would make that wear out a pair of sneakers real fast.

Is this as fast as he/you would like to go?. Irving .15 Special.

Kim,
Should be a screamer!
I see the plans call for a .40 are you reducing the dimemsions to better suit a .15? Or are they good as is.
"nevermind I failed to read the word "reduced"

Re: Patrick's Racer
My plan, at the moment, is to bring it up to a slightly smallish size for a .15-size airplane. Patrick has a Fox BB .15 he likes to crow about, and wants a plane that will "let it really rip"!
Knowing his susceptibility to dizziness, this is more than a little terrifying for me, so I may make him use a handle lanyard, with one end tied around his neck! He also tends to "travel" when flying, so I'm not sure where we're gonna do this, if we do. I want to keep my "Welcome Status" at the airport, so I don't know if we'll try this there if his technique doesn't improve.
Gonna go get breakfast at my new favorite restaurant, and watch P.V.'s video...They Got WiFi !!!! So I'll check back in a moment!

Re: Patrick's Racer
This sounds like a really fun project. Patrick sounds like some people I've known. Usually smart as hell and enjoyable company with enough redeeming qualities to overlook their eccentricities. In fact I'd like to try some of the things he likes to do, as I am also a lifelong speed freak. My 35' lines help me in that pursuit, since I don't get dizzy except possibly on the first flight or two.
I hope it develops into an ongoing project.

Re: Patrick's Racer
Oh yeah! We have a big time, and I think his job is finally allowing him more time and funds to get things on the road. We're supposed to run his beloved Fox BB .15 this afternoon, and get some hard numbers on what it turns. I don't know if we're gonna order preshaped, airfoiled planks for the wings, or gouge them out on our own.
I think this deal might follow through, as all the hardware is laying around to do. We'll see. I want to put in some serious time with him with the emphasis on getting him to stay in a set area. A long-lined plane may be just the ticket.
He also has an ARF Flite Streak I'm after him to fly. So, we'll see...

I saw that vid a couple weeks ago. Insane. I loved the bracing pole.
The only reason it even has a wing is for something to attach the control lines too.
Blip throttled, I thought it was fast before he snapped his wrist!

I used to watch those rat racers down in Portland Or at delta Park at the big circle. They had the brace pole, but they would just set the handle in the pole v-blocks once it was on the needle, then duck down below the lines at the pole and wait it out. That thing would scythe you right in two if it got loose.
